Dr H isn't putting the catheter back in, he said there is a good stream when manually expressed, pressing on the bladder. When the bladder has been stretched out the muscles can't contract like before and/or there is some infection, hence swelling. I'm glad, catheters are uncomfortable and irritating, and we don't want Sky's urethra irritated any more than it has been already.

Visited Sky, still not urinating on his own. I placed my hand on his cheek and he laid his head down in my palm. I could feel the rumble of a purr through my fingertips. The vet is not worried about there being anything else going on, just the stretched out muscles need to tighten up so they can contract enough to squeeze the urine out without help. I was so busy talking about the health issues that I forgot to ask about getting him a box. There was a young man, employee, I talked to him and he said he'd run it by the dr, but he couldn't think of any reason why not. They get all kinds of boxes, he can find one that would fit. That would be so nice, Sky could have his own little safe place, a place to be "alone".

That would be nice for Sky to have somewhere to retreat. I hope he continues to improve.

Has your vet ran a full urinalysis, to check for crystal, UTI, etc? What medications is your kitty getting? You need a anti-inflammatory to help bring down the inflammation. I also think a ultrasound of the bladder could be warranted. Sadly, blockages in male kitty's are quite common and a medical emergency. Hopefully they get your kitty unblocked soon. It is a very rough road.

mustang, the blockage was eliminated the first night. He received an antibiotic injection, along with the sedative and anti-inflammatory injections. Crystals were actually visible in the urine discharged after the blockage was broken up. The issue now is that he still isn't able to push out a good stream on his own. The vet called Friday saying he wanted to reinsert a catheter, that he is concerned. He just had to go through all the things that can happen: that there is surgery, that he hates to do and will only as a last resort; kidney and heart issues; that some cats just don't make it. I went to see him Sat. He appeared pretty good and snuggled, as good as possible with a cath and cone. Purred into my hand again. He eyes seemed bright and he was interested in me and the activity in the room. After everything Dr H said on the phone, I flat out asked him if he was getting a bad feeling about Sky and he said no, right away, no hesitation. I will go in on Monday with a list of questions; what all he is getting now, and about the most recent blood work, urinalysis, and any tests that could be helpful. Thank you for some great suggestions!
In all Sky looked pretty good, bright enough, interested in me and the activity. I also need to ask Dr H about how much Sky is eating. I'm going to take some of the food he is use to, it may be dry but Sky needs calories. Oh, he is getting fluids. Dr H said that, in urinary issues he gives fluids even if the cat is "drinking like a fish."
I am nowhere near losing hope, Sky is a tough little guy, look at what he's already been through. But the emotions are still rough, I had to sit in the car for several minutes after leaving the clinic. The tears came pretty hard. Maybe mostly just hating to walk away from Sky, leaving him in a cage.
It's been three and a half years since picking him up, out of the ditch. His recuperation took enough time, but him adjusting to his new life took time. It hasn't even been three months that he has been coming downstairs, opening himself up to the entire house. And now he's stuck in a cage. It just feels like he's been through enough already!

Still praying for Sky. I'm glad to hear the vet doesn't have a really bad feeling. Hopefully he has had a nice, quiet weekend and is recouping nicely.

Has anybody used one of those things that are suppose to replace the cone? Look like giant, puffy collars. Do they work? Looks like they would be more comfortable than the cone. a lot easier to move around and eat too!

I tried the padded one too but she could reach her stitches, so depends what you are trying to protect! How is he doing now?

No change as yet. I will be going up to see him this afternoon. I sure wish it wasn't a 40 mile round trip just to see him.

Sky looked the same to me. Purred for me, was looking around, weight seems the same. Dr H said the catheter is out, waiting to see if he'll pee. Dr H said tomorrow is the day to make a decision. Much of the time he was talking it was kinda like he was thinking out loud. Saying that there are quite a few cats that block, very few that need the surgery, and he only does that as a last resort. He said that the tip of Sky's penis doesn't look good, probably circulation, probably from having the cath so much. I told him that I am happy that he doesn't like to do surgery unless it's absolutely necessary, that I trust him to do what's best. I asked him if the surgery has many complications. He looked at me and said no, the ones he's done or know of, the cats do very well afterwards. Any surgery, as a surgery, has risks. Reminded me of when my mom was in for hip surgery and the surgeon came out and said he had some doubts and wanted to do a ct. Turned out her hip was cracked but not displaced, so it could heal just fine on it's own. He said he loved doing surgery, but he will not cut someone open if they don't need it. But, Dr H isn't going to bring the surgery up unless he's having to consider it, just that simple. As happy as I am that this waiting will be over, it's a little scary. Is asking you to pray that Sky pees weird? That does make for an interesting prayer!

Sorry this is taking so long, so stressful for Sky to be away from home, if it were me I would prob have pushed for the surgery just to have things over and done with but thats just me, I tend to always do the wrong thing!
I hope Sky pees soon and gets to come home:)

Of course it's not weird to pray for or ask us to pray for Sky to be healthy and pee; that is exactly what is needed here. While surgery is avoidable just so you know I think Lady_MSCE had or has a cat who had the surgery and he did wonderfully. However he can pee, that's a good thing! All bodily functions "go"!
