I watched my poor, sweet Sky go from one litter box to another; stand for a minute, make a soft cry then move to the next box to try again. All 5 boxes down stairs. Arranged to meet my vet at the clinic, we agreed he had to be blocked. I held the gas mask over his little face while dr used a catheter to break up the blockage. So much blood in that urine! Dr will do blood tests in the am to check kidney levels. I only hope any damage is reversible. Then we will discuss Sky's new diet. Anybody have experience and advise? Sky is my boy that I picked up out of a ditch, barely able to walk. Discovered one eye was missing. Had to have been hit by a car. Cleaned up the socket then stitched it shut. All 4 canine teeth were shattered and had to be removed. Minor damage to a few bones, but mostly neurological. If he tries to run or jump he falls down. But he sure can climb! Pulls himself up onto my bed quite well! His jaw is a tiny bit off so he does have his tongue sticking out a large percentage of the time. The second shot shows him conspiring with some of the other boys to keep me from making my bed. From left to right; Mr Man, Zeus, Sky and Sunny.

Oh poor Sky. I sure hope he is feeling better this morning. My Casey has had crystals in his urine before causing pain to urinate but I've never had him block up completely. Let us know how he is doing.

What are you feeding Casey? I tried calling the clinic, he had a fever and blood work not back yet. Girl sounded rushed and no info. I felt like that was a wasted call. She said to call back early afternoon. But, he's alive and, I guess, not in crisis. Hope I don't have to drive all the way in for answers. This clinic is excellent, the best vets. I bypass closer clinics to go there. He is in great hands, even if one girl is in a hurry. I just feel so bad for Sky.

Our cat Mousey had a urinary blockage. He was put on a special cat food we got from the vet. I don't remember the name, but it was a prescription diet. It apparently tasted better than the regular cat food, because we couldn't keep the other cat out of the special food. We finally gave up and just gave it to both of them, but it was expensive. He did have problems from time to time after we put him on the special food, but he was an indoor, outdoor cat, and was probably eating other things. We did try to keep him in, so we could really control his diet, but he was so sad, we gave in, and let him do what he wanted.
I hope Sky gets better soon.

Fuzzles has had a couple issues in the past few years (Blockage, then crystals, and most recently an UTI - apparently very uncommon in a neutered male). They are scary to deal with and it is so hard to see them hurting.
Fuzzles is on special food now as well. It is expensive and stinks to high heaven. Urinary SO I think it is called? It comes in a green and white bag and we buy it from the vet. I will check for sure when I get home. He gets half a can of the wet food in the morning, the other half in the evening, and all the free choice dry food and water he can eat / drink. He hasn't had any crystals or blockages since he has been on it.
Hope your kitty is feeling better soon!

I thought my vet was going to make me buy the special prescription food but she didn't. I feed him a mix of Purina One Urine Health (not sure of the exact name) with some regular indoor Meow Mix or the like. I also split a can of wet food between to two cats at night (just as a little way to sneak in some more liquids). And he likes to drink out of the bath tub so I usually leave some water in there for him. I think the main thing is to make sure they are getting plenty of liquids.
I know it is nerve wracking but I would think that no news from the vet is good news. Hopefully you can get a good update this afternoon.

The best I could get was the catheter is still in, still a little blood in the urine, he will need to stay, at least, until Wed; but he is doing better. I will go for a visit tomorrow. Then I can get some real answers, from the vet himself. Getting every cat strictly on wet will be fun. The biggest issue are the ferals (ex now) that were adults when they came to me. Behaviors are pretty much ingrained and have to be worked with as best I can. There have been times two of the boys will be in a stand off and I put food in a bowl, saying plenty of food no need to fight for resources. And it works. Resources are very important. This may take some creativity.

Is your vet suggesting putting all on a strictly wet diet? I still leave the dry food out 24/7 and just give one can of wet at night before bed. It seems to be working so far for us.
Sounds like Sky is doing a bit better. I hope you have a great visit with him tomorrow.

Dr H called, he said the blood work is good. No damage to the kidneys! Dr H said they will probably pull the catheter tomorrow, we just want to give the urethra a chance to get over the trauma and try to lessen the risk of blocking right back up. I'm just so relieved his kidneys are okay.

Wow, this thread has been a bit of a roller coaster. Poor little kitty. It's so tough when a furry loved on is in pain, you want to help them immediately. Knowing you have a good vet is a help to relieve some stress but still... So glad Sky is on the mend and yes, an all clear on the kidneys is a BIG relief. Here's hoping the special diet prevents that from ever happening again! smileys-cats-959899

That is good news. Pets are like babies, in that they can't tell us where it hurts. It makes it so stressful to try to help them.
Mousy didn't get any wet food. It was all dry, and came in a small bag, that cost twice as much as the big bag of Purina. What can you do? They're our babies too, so you do what you have to.
I guess I was just trying to make it easy, so the two boys we had at that time got only dry food in their feeder. I never had to worry. I just kept the feeder full and they did the rest.

i was told not to feed my cats fish or anything with fish in it because of the magnesium. so even tho i am down to one cat now i feed only meat and get meat base dry food. oh wait i forgot about the feral cat that comes in the middle of the night. smileys-cats-959899

I've heard the same thing about foods with fish in it. I'm sure the cheap wet food I buy doesn't have real fish in it but I steer clear from it anyway.

Sorry, I did go to visit him yesterday. They had pulled the catheter, early afternoon, not that long before I got there. I hate thinking about it, he looked so miserable. He didn't move, except to look at me, so still. He could've cared less that I was there. I know it's stress and medication and all, I just felt like he hates me. All that matters is that he's getting better and I know he will forgive me.

On the way home from the vet, that first night, in the dark, there was something in the road, out in the country. I thought large dog? Turned around and went back, it was sooo dark. Got my truck in position to use the headlights to see. It was a small deer, fresh kill. Whoever hit it knew damn good and well they did, but it was me that dragged the poor thing out of the road.

I called and was told that Sky is "dribbling", not good. Dr is in surgery but will decide if the catheter needs to go back in and call me when he's done. Sky will not be coming home today.
