So I finally got over to the neighboring farm and talked to the latest instructor working there. I had met her before and felt she was very nice, and I know that she is steadily progressing with her own riding education thru the clinics they hold there. I'm going to start weekly lessons on Zippy there next week.
I decided to use this trainer mostly bc they have a wonderful indoor arena so I can ride more this summer, out of the sun and the heat. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the girl that worked with Zippy this spring, but shes further away to trailer to, no indoor arena, and its summer and this area gets so much busier with tourist travel and traffic, that I don't want to get out on the road to go to her place when,., this place is literally a mile away. As well, shes very busy, just finished up her Masters, is a Mom, trains, shows, etc., etc. that I really think, for ME, this could be a good move.
I have so enjoyed the Patrick King (western dressage/MD Horse Expo clinician) lessons and clinic I took this spring where I borrowed a lesson horse and got to focus on me. But, now its time to focus on both me and Zippy. I also traveled slightly more than an hour, one way, to do those clinics,., so kind of further away too. He is actually been going so well for me that I think this is the next natural step for us. Since I already know how to ride, I definitely think that this girl can help me, thereby I can help Zippy. And,.., if it doesn 't work out, I'll go to Jess again.
My ONLY major concern,., the barn drama at that barn,.., seems to be part of the fabic there. Its where the 'would be trainer' from last fall came from AND, when I walked in, I overheard them discussing another local barn,.., Hummm,..,?? It is a 'competitive' barn from what I've heard,., AND I've HEARD A LOT! I'll keep you posted.

PS,., Speaking of DRAMA,.., Apparently E, (jerk, 'would be trainer') from last fall, has gotten herself kicked off another farm in the area, and is now working from yet ANOTHER farm in the area. My neighbor gave me the scoop on whats going on with her, since she occasionally sees her bc they live near each other (her in laws farm). But she no longer 'trains' for my friend either. Sounds like E is having some rough karma these days,..,

Red... As long as you only take lessons their you should be able to steer clear of the gossip and bad-mouthing. It really is a shame that the owner of such a nice facility stoops to such a degree as it makes her look bad, sound cheap, catty and worse... Barn drama and cattiness seems to follow those who compete....especially in women not so much in men but then not so many men around when I worked the barn/show circuit for a living.
You should be OK...just keep out of it. Trailer in, ride over...do your lesson and go home. If you don't associate with the people it should not capture you in their ridiculous drama... Use what the facility has to offer for amenities and trainer...just forget the politics.
Enjoy your lessons.

I am so happy to hear you and Zippy are going to start lessons! I think that is fabulous. We can all learn new things and help teach some new things to our horses. I agree with hl4l - I think if you are only there for lessons and not "hanging around" you should be able to stay clear of the drama. Be friendly to people, say hello, and go about your business. If they try to get you into it, just make up some excuse to walk away (Oh, I need to cool Zippy down, I need to go collect my things, etc).
Will you be riding Zippy to the lessons? Are the roads ok enough to do that?
Let us know how things go!

Thanks for the confidence boost you guys!! I will trailer over, it would be nice to ride over, but this is ZIPPY we're talking about, not Red. Red - NO problem, Zippy - PROBLEM,.., hence the lessons I 'feel' a bit inferior in some ways, going over there, bc of my older rig, my western saddle, blah, blah,.., but I just don't care,., I need to 'go with what I got' and get better. Altho, they wanted to know if I was interested in showing (I'm not that interested).
I am who I am,., and at the moment, I don't have 20k for a new truck for my hobby,.., So 'Old Goldie' it is. BTW, 'Old Goldie' pulled that tractor out of the pond yesterday, NO PROBLEM!! So Old Goldie still has some life left

red....
DON'T EVER FEEL INFERIOR!!!
You have what you have, it is yours alone not the banks!! What you have is wonderful by most anyone's standards.... If they choose to be snooty...just remember they need to write a whopping big check every month to "live-up to those standards" and they don't have the pleasure of looking out into THEIR yard and see THEIR horse staring back!!! FACT and TRUTH!!
As long as you are happy with it....so be it. The day you want different...do that too.
Go, Enjoy and have a great time learning together!!

Thanks again HL4L I just would love a new truck bc mine is older,.., BUT, its fairly low mileage , comparatively, has only had one owner (me) and is maintained regularly (altho it needs a paint job). I'm hoping a newer, used truck, pops up on my radar, for a decent price,.., but in the mean time, its all I have. And IT WORKS GREAT!
Trucks have gotten soooooo expensive, and most used are too big, too much truck for me to want to get involved in. I'd love to shop around, and sometimes I do, for a newer, simple 2 door, V8 pick up, that I can haul with. I love the simplicity of my older truck, no bells or whistles to worry about, but newer would be nice too.

Hey...go find a Maaco and get it painted if that would make you feel better.
My {our} truck is a 2003. Then, that truck cost us $40,000 almost and it is NOT a diesel but a gas Hemi engine. Yes, a Dodge is what we own. I put $10,000 cash down to make the payments "affordable".... We still have that truck, plan on keeping that truck a long time too. It is in great shape, only 85,000 miles on it and we have put all the mileage on it and bought it new. Today...that same truck would cost me even more and is out of the question.
Most around here have older trucks that are fabulously dependable and tow, work all day long. The ranchers can afford new, some have them...but they still use the older truck for most everything. The new truck sits on the driveway and goes out to church Sunday morn with the family...then sleeps again.
Ahh...here comes our much needed rain with thunder accompanying it... music to my ears. We need the rain. Going to go open the horse trailer so the new guy can go in our of the rain if he wishes....

I AGREE 100%^^ Every time I consider the price of new, I know that keeping Goldie running is wayy more appealing Its cheaper to keep it running then buy brand new, and everything else I see used, has MORE mileage than Goldie. ie., somebody else's used truck, with some 'needing to be fixed' problems, most likely. I've priced painting it, and thats way more up my alley too. Good advice HK4L

Ok,.., hoping I didn't make a mistake here, altho I certainly had no intention of it, and emphasized that in my message. I sent a nice message to Zippy's trainer from this spring, letting her know that I was probably going to try some lessons at the neighboring farm,.., Altho I had discussed doing some lessons with her, this is just so much more convenient, and it has an indoor, which will allow me to ride in the shade. I again thanked her for her help, but explained my motivations for wanting to ride there. Haven't heard back from her, which isn't necessary, but certainly did not want to offend either. Never know what is proper with horse people,.., so I'm second guessing myself now,.. Grrr!
Heres the message,., any thoughts?? I wanted her to know bc we are on a few same local forums,., She probably doesn't really care, and I'm just overthinking it.
"Hi Jessica, Hope your summer is going well. I know you are BUSY, so maybe you will get time to relax now. Zippy is doing GREAT altho I'm not inclined to ride as much as I should in the heat ? My bad, but the older I get, the more it bothers me. I wanted to tell you that I'm thinking about some instruction over at Castle Farm. I know we talked about it with you also, and the reason I wanted to tell you this was because I didnt want to offend you in any way. You are AWESOME, and Zippy came back one happy camper, but with summer traffic, the heat etc, it would be more convenient for me to try things there. I think the indoor will keep me riding more regularly bc I truly can not handle the heat. The proximity of that farm also dictates my decision. I just didnt want to offend you in anyway, or have you wonder why I am doing that,.., I can not THANK YOU enough for the way you handled my Zippy. The only reason I am thinking about the other farm is - 2 reasons - indoor =s more riding time out of the sun and heat, and, proximity. If it isn't to my liking, or the progress doesnt come, I hope I can use your expertise again. As well, I may send Zip to you in the Fall for a refresher if need be. You are fabulous, skilled, PROFESSIONAL and a highly effective horse trainer, instructor, the total package. Please let me know your thoughts, and hope you understand my 'bit' of a dilemma. Also, anytime you want to take your kids on the Pirate Ship, let me know. Joe is the Captain, and I would be more than happy to get you guys aboard for some summer fun. Thank you again Jessica. I appreciate all that you've done for me and Zippy. Stay cool and enjoy your summer. xo, Dinah & Zippy"

red... many in the horse world would not of said anything just moved on silently..
That said, you wrote a nice note to her thanking her for her assistance and also telling her you do want to come back and still ride with her. Summer heat and a beach community mean terrible travel conditions for most anyone.. Factor is towing a loaded horse trailer for many miles along congested touristy drivers is scary.
If I was Jessica I would not be offended. You both spoke of this before, you are only following up now on that discussion..........
You might not hear anything from her, but she knows what is going on and it should not be "awkward" if you bump into each other someplace. That actually could give you the opening of a Thank-you for mentioning them or a I so miss your expertise.... smileys-home-474322 ...

Thanks HL4L. I felt like it would be MORE awkward and offensive if I didn't let her know. Even tho we discussed my coming over to her farm 1x, shes been so busy herself,.., she shows, does mounted shooting clinics, travels with her horses, judges, is a mom of small children, has a BF, etc., etc, that she never followed up on our originial conversation either. If it were me, I'd appreciate someone letting me know,.., Probably just 'overthinking' it

We need to learn that our decisions help us become better people, riders. or what ever , you needing to get more riding time in with Mr Z. as a student at the closer facility should work out fine. and jess should not have a negative comment or thought. everyone who is professional should now that we can not help all people all the time, and right now the farm across the road is going to help for what you want now.
as for truck and trailer. well, no one had a worse one than me when i was showing. i always got there early and parked wayyyyyy far away from where people were going to hang out, but me and my tb and junior rider tore up the ring and came home with many a grand championship beating out mega money trailers and trucks. it is not the truck that makes the horse it is the horse and rider that make a winning team..

Have fun with your lessons! Don't stick around long enough to allow the boarders there to drag you into their drama. As for your truck and trailer, who cares what it looks like as long as it gets the job done. Anyone that wants to look down their nose at you because you don't have all the fancy stuff just isn't worth your time!

Thanks Terry! Looking forward to tomorrows lesson too Also heard back from Jess (previous trainer from this spring), and she was completely happy for Zippy and I,., no ill will about the other barn. She totally understood, and likes that facility too. Who wouldn't, its very nice ,., I'm very excited to get to ride there. Fingers crossed that tomorrow goes smoothly,., its been sooooo HOT here lately,., a break will be nice.
