Tomorrow after work a friend and I are moving Benny to a new stable just north of the city.
The place we are at right now is ok, but just not the right fit for me or for Benny.
For one, access (or lack thereof) to a farrier was a major issue. I could not get one to save my soul. Finally begged and paid for two trims to get a farrier out to do him.
It is in a semi populated area, and not all the neighbors are horse friendly. The neighbor kids had the audacity to throw water balloons at Benny and I when I was riding him in from his field (barn property, not on their place at all, was just riding near the fence) Thank God Benny is basically unflappable, and this didn't phase him. None hit us, but I was not happy.
Benny is low man on the totem pole, and the only horse out there without shoe all the way around, so he gets cut up and body sore all the time. I get horses will be horses and am not expecting him to come in every time without a hair out of place. Makes me sad. That, and when the BO decided to go hunting he took all the horses in Benny's field with him (except Benny of course). Poor Benny tried to go through the fence to get to the mare pasture, so I'm doctoring all sorts of wire cuts from that too. Nothing really deep or serious, just annoying.
So I'm moving him to a jumper barn. I'm excited. The BM seemed super nice when I went to see the place, and so did a few of the boarders I met. For only $25 more than what I'm already paying he gets a semi- private pen and I get 2 indoor arenas. (2 more than what is currently available)
So I'm excited but nervous. Will update you all with pictures once he is settled in tomorrow night.

Good for both of you. I'd have jumped off and kicked those kid's butts. We're east of Calgary and there aren't very many places left to board at with an indoor arena. Four have closed to boarders in the last few years. We pay $275 and our horses have private paddocks and there's an indoor. The only downside is that it's not very big, just adequate, and they only heat it if someone is coming out in the winter, not all the time. They have automatic waterers, too. And someone is on site 24/7. Pavement all the way, too. I hate dusty roads. The board is going up to $300 soon.

I would have loved to haul off on those kids, but when I started boarding there the first thing the BM said was 'No Drama' so I figured reading the riot act to them probably would not have fallen within that.
This place is $300. It has an 'outdoor arena' which is more or less a field with a fence inside a fence. No real footing to speak of. And a round pen which is actually in decent shape.
I was told the hay would be good, but I'm not crazy about what he is feeding. It's dusty and I'm glad Benny had been mostly been sticking to the pasture. ( too low in the herd to get to eat off the bale)

The new place sounds nice. Good luck with the move!
I would have been so ticked when those kids started throwing water balloons at you while you were riding! I don't know how you managed to keep your cool, because I don't think I could have.

Good luck with moving. As for the kids. I would have went off on them. Drama? Nope that was your welfare and when it comes to that I would have told the BM there is a difference!!

I can't help but wonder. If those kids were so bold they would throw water balloons at a horse and rider, what might they be throwing at the horses, when there wasn't someone around to see them? Sounds like you are making a great move by getting Benny out of there. JMO, but I think those kids should be spanked, then their parents should be spanked. Well, since I am handing out swats, how about one for your BO, for leaving Benny, in the pasture, alone. Surly he had to know Benny would be upset by that.

From what I understand the owner just having this place is a bit of a tender issue for the neighbors. He was there years before any of them, but when they start building million dollar homes next to barns... Well I don't know quite what these people were thinking. These kids are probably listening to their parents complain and think it is ok to act like this. I just wanted to get out of the water balloon situation as soon as I could. I was riding bareback with a halter and the situation could have turned ugly fast if Benny did decide to spook. I give him more credit than I should, he is so awesome sometimes I forget he is only 3. I try not to think about what these kids might do unsupervised or alone. I know he has been having issues with trespassing because he put trap cameras up EVERYWHERE and twice as many signs along the fences, gates, ect. I didn't inquire any further than that, at just point I just want out. I noticed he's been getting iffy about getting caught, and I have been telling myself it's just because it's a big field and he's testing me. In the back of my mind though I did wonder if there was something going on because he used to rush to the gate to visit anybody. I was miffed about Benny being alone too, I don't so much mind that he was alone as I do that he ended up panicked and tried the fence. I mean you take an entire herd away, but one horse? I'm not surprised he tried the fence. He could at least have given him a buddy. Only a few more hours though! I am moving him right after work.

No point in dregging up the past facility, sometimes the barn owners create the drama. and benny will be happy at the new place , he and you deserve it.

I think you're definitely making the right decision to move! Similar happened to a friend of mine, her horse was turned out in an individual paddock next to two horses and both horses move barns. They BO kept her horse there alone and she honestly could not see an other horse on the property (all the other fields/paddocks are on other sides of the barn). So for all the mare new she was completely alone out there.. Which if she's comfortable like that, fine but the mare was pacing and running the fence constantly and having serious anxiety issues because of it. Someone else who boards there ended up calling my friend to let her know what was going on and they ended up moving her back into a herd. I feel like it should have been the BO duty to at least let you/her know what was going on with your horse. Not all of them are ok being on their own like that. Horses are herd animals by nature so no wonder they would be stressed out on their own.
I hope the move goes well! I couldn't imagine if someone would have done that to me and my horse. I would have given them an earful that's for sure! At that point I don't consider it "drama" but more like self preservation. I'm Glad Benny is so well behaved, even an older horse could have gotten really freaked out by that.

Benny is successfully settled into the new place. He hauled like a champ. Walked off the trailer and sniffed his neighbours once and started eating like he had been there is whole life. Not fussed about it at all. When we got to the new place it was nearly dark, so no pictures of there just yet, but I have included some fall riding pictures from when I rode him in from the back pasture today. Did I mention I love this horse?

Benny sounds like such a great guy. I especially like the last picture with Benny's ears listening to you and your shadow in the back ground. I am so glad everything went well, and hope it continues to go well as Benny gets acquainted with his new herd. I am looking forward to the pictures, once you get to be there in the daylight. Have a good night Benny. Oh and you too Apollo.
