From what I can see, it looks like the top "layer" of his hoof cracked open. I hope the farrier can help. Is he lame?

It's weird isn't it, its like a finger growing from his band, the bottom crack is almost out, hopefully Friday she can smooth it and chip it away, it's the weirdest thing I've seen, I'll try to get a close up of where it's coming from. Hes not lame or bothered by it at all, luckily, I want to use him to make a path to walk the dogs but I'll wait till farrier has been, I'm worried the deep snow rips it off and makes it worse.

We had a pony whose hoof cracked like that - and he was prone to founder and colic - eventually our ponies hoof seperated and he started lieing down all of the time. It was a huge abcess deep deep in and did not get hot or ooze for months- when it did ooze it OOZED out of a 6 inch long gash at the coronary band. Eventually he came out of it.

God don't say that, I'm a worry wort over him as it is:( He had a little separation late summer but it went away, all the hay I got this year has no alfalfa, I use slow feeder nets, I dread laminitis, I did notice a teeny sign of separation yesterday too, no doubt farrier will let me know whats best.

Did the farrier make it out this morning? Yes:) hes all fixed up, I'll take pics tomorrow, she said he's had that a while but she usually smooths it off, she said she must have forgot last time so it got longer and I noticed it for a change, she also managed to cut the bottom crack right out now too so I don't have to worry about that getting worse:)
