Some of you may remember Dax colicked a few months back, no idea why but I noticed a few days after an injury to his hoof, I'll see if I can find the pics, just like hed banged it high up on the inside foreleg, it's been growing out ok just a little ridge nothing bad.
Well yesterday I noticed he has a horizontal crack opening up on his coronary band from where that initial injury was round to the side of his foot, I'll load pictures this afternoon.
i am so worried , farrier can't come till thursday earliest, she says not to worry she has super strong glue and can build him a foot if needed but I looked up all this stuff online about blow outs and coffin bones and last night I couldn't sleep and when I did I dreamt his foot fell off and the vet had to euthanise him, I know I'm being silly, heck I sound like ny but I've put the shitters up myself something rotten and am scared to even look at it today.
Has anyone had anything similar?

This is the picture from a week or so after he colicked if you look closely you can see but you'll have to enlarge it

My new horse has the same looking "slits" in his hoof...his are more to the front than the side though. My farrier when I brought it up said relax, it is fine and won't cause issue or lameness. He has been a working farrier for about 15 years, very talented and shoes many horses in many demanding disciplines... He said he has never seen it cause a problem and it will grow out and disappear for something else to take its place and make me worry... ...great, just what I need...more gray hair!!

i would not worry to much about that. it is growing out. perhaps that was going on at the time of his colick and it is a small infection coming out. if you are worried , soak it in epsome salts and water, and just get the hoof trimmed more often until it grows out.,

Agree with the others. If there is no heat in the hoof then worry but it will grow out. Put some reducine or corona on the coronary band to help with growth. Reducine works better.

These are 2 updated pictures from last night, see how bad it is, I sent them to farrier who thinks he's had an abcess blow out, she's coming to patch it up Sunday, he doesn't seem lame but I can't see it getting better anytime soon:(

Wow! they do look pretty bad. we had a mare that blew out like that from potomic horse fever and it was on all 4 hooves. withing 6 months they were growing down and all new hoof looked better than the old. so no riding and no stones. and no shoes. perhaps a boot to protect it for a few weeks.??
but a trim every 6 weeks is very important so it does not break apart.

My guys is nothing like that wag finger...tiny in comparison!
I too would be concerned in the size alone of the crack.
Patch it, but better make sure there is nothing "locked" inside that needs out...puss, debris...
Poor baby...makes me hurt { } to look at it although he probably feels no discomfort now but relief if it was abscessed.
Ohhhh...what our animals put us through. smileys-sad-593832

I know, She is coming Sunday, I get them done every 4-6 weeks depending, he's not lame and it's not bothering him, looks scary though, now you know why I had nightmares, I texted her to ask if I should put anything on it in the meantime:)
He hasn't been lame atall which is strange come to think of it, there's no heat nothing, I'll have another poke around today, hopefuly she can shed some light on it Sunday, I might even post on ht see what smilie and the other hoof person think!

Wow that is a huge crack. If it was an abcess it would have been hot and he would have been lame. How long has the crack been there? I would be worried about a fugal infection getting it there. If so it won't heal up but keep cracking. I had a horse that had a crack that never would go back together. No matter what the farrier did it would not close up. Finally took him to a farrier 3hrs away and he dissected the hoof and found a fugal infection in it. Took me 3 months to get his hoof back. Be interesting to see what your farrier finds out. I would get some horse shoers secret or even better farriers formula and get some help with growing that hoof out. Also what is the big bump above the foot?

There isn't really anything that you can paint on the crack. If anything use reducine on the coronary band. It promotes growth..We use to use it on the race horses and I have also used it. I wouldn't do anything with the crack until your farrier checks it out..

LD - I might use a 10% bleach solution to spray on the crack to keep fungus and bacteria from growing in there. Clean out any mud or dirt if you can and then treat maybe once a day or every other day. That is what I am doing with Mister's feet to keep the fungus out. Also, as best you can, keep him somewhere dry. This will help prevent unwanted growth in there too. Let us know what the farrier says on Sunday.

Aerosol can sprays blue product. It is antibacterial and germicidal. Forms a barrier although it also allows the "injury site" to breathe... Might help keep the moisture out... I know I have used it on cuts to keep flies off and stop, prevent the ooze that attracts them...it just seems to make that "dampness barrier" you might seek. just a thought... Or Duct Tape.... ...just a piece on the crack and removed as soon as the rain stops and ground is pretty much dry again...

So I had to cancel farrier as I'm dying with the cold and am struggling to do kennels never mind stand for another 1 1/2 hours after struggling through that, meantime she says it wont be a problem till it moves farther down the foot, she will have to keep glueing it to keep it together, she says that's when it becomes an issue, it hasn't progressed any farther round which is good, hopefuly I feel better soon, this has been a bummer

Just curious. His angle is off and he looks so upright and has very little toe. Is this hoof always like that?

i was going to comment on that also, kinda. i was wondering if his heels were long? not to sound insulting in ANY way, but his hoof looks a lot like our mules foot , she stands very upright, and has looong heels, but then again i know nothing about angles.

Yes, it looks a lot like a mule's foot. I don't know if it's the camera angle, how it looked at that particular time, or what but the front looks like a colt's foot. And, no, I'm not trying to be insulting either, just curious.
