My filly got blood poisoning-tetanus. It all started 3 days ago, she started to ackt funny, her belly was dragged in and she was not her self. She got antibiotics and vetalgin for calming, second day she stareted to loose balance and we notice she was not lying during the night. Third day she was all uptight, she looked like she was cramping all the time. Vet came and said it is tetanus, and he does not have antitetanus to give. We were so mad, we called few friend and one had one dose left. She got it, and is under antibiotics(pencilin) and vetalgin to help her relax now. After 7 days she will be given one more dose, but we have to go to Hungary to get it, because there is no anitetanus in Croatia left, can you imagine that?? She did not have any cut or wound. We suspect she stung somewhere where we could not notice. Please prayers for my little girl. Hope she survives

How sad. and how unfortunate that your country does not have the necessary drugs to help your animals. I pray she pulls thru all of this. . sometimes puncutures do not show up. they get cut and heal over. could be from a nail or metal just showing up in the area they live in and get scratched. . please keep us informed. i found this.. it is an eye opener for all to read. www.thehorse.com/articles/10604/equine-tetanus-signs-and-treatment

Oh no Lip! It's so hard for me to comprehend that there is no anti-tetanus anywhere in your country. I hope your mare starts to improve and she can get the second dose. Praying for you and your mare.

I am so sorry to hear this Lip. I will be saying a prayer for your filly. Hopefully she starts to improve and makes a full recovery. Fingers crossed that she gets the second dose of medicine, seems a bit negligent that the vet would let the supply of such an important drug run so low.

Perhaps if she is suffering she will have to be put down.. i can not imagine the pain you and your family are having at this time. the question. do we put her down or do we let the medicine work???/ to you ..

Not wanting to look like the Googler but www.thehorse.com/articles/10604/equine-tetanus-signs-and-treatment is a good link to tetanus in horses. I hate to say this Lip but the prognosis for your filly is not good. I have never had a foal with tetanus but did have a calf that had it and we had him euthanized because he was suffering so much. Prayers with you.

We called second vet for opinion, he will come in the morning, he is far away, but she deserves every chance she can get.

Oh my, how sad Lippy We had a dog that got, and was able to recover, from tetanus many years ago. It took a some months of hospitalization for him to pull thru. I certainly hope she is able to get the meds she needs. ** Thru our experience with our dog, we learned that apparently, barns and horses, and areas where are horses are stabled, are places that easily harbor the bacteria that causes tetanus ** It can enter thru a small cut, etc. I certainly hope, and pray, that she pulls thru

i am surprised they did not put in intravenous for antibiotic. easier for her to get and able to absorb into her system. especially is she is not eating. and shots are painful after a while. Still praying she come thru all this. a long process. but worth doing to save her.

I pray that since she made it through the night, she will continue to fight and improve. Sounds like you are doing all you can for her. Which mare is it?
