I think I am ready to start taking some lessons around here. I most likely will be doing English riding (dressage, jumping, maybe some eventing) but surprise, surprise, I don't fit into my old breeches that I wore as a teenager (not to mention the elastic is rotting out). So I need to get some new breeches. There is a riding shop near me I will go see what they have but I have also been looking online and found these that I kind of liked: www.statelinetack.com/item/tuffrider-ladies-show-circuit-breeches/E003557/
So for those of you who ride English in breeches, can you give some feedback about what you like and don't like? I really would prefer to stay away from the low rise pants (which seems to be the in thing right now). I don't want to be a plumber rider if you know what I mean.
I also will need a new helmet so recommendations for those would be great too, and remember I am in Louisiana so something that breathes would be best.
I may eventually end up doing some shows so I would like my apparel to be nice enough for a show (but I'm not talking A level showing here!).

Good price, look nice. They do look like they are a full cut to the waist, so "higher-waisted" if you like that and are comfortable in it. Tuff-riders...I see many wear them schooling. I would definitely try on some different brands and style cuts before purchasing or make sure you can return easily.
I had Devon-aire breeches for schooling which I found to be comfortable and breathe...around $50 a pair. They had a man-made knee patch that gripped like leather not self-fabric. Again, I refuse to spend mega-bucks for a name...I just won't especially for schooling quality. I had a lt. grey, tan, dark blue...they washed well, kept their shape and the leg Velcros had a lot of adjust-ability...also the regular length fit long enough they didn't drive me nuts inside my boots being to high on the calf. I had Harry Halls that I can remember for showing in along with some other names I can't remember clearly..something Sportsman... To many years ago to admit to yet I do remember having a heart attack then paying $240 a pair for them....remember my son is now 27 and this was before he was born!! Long time ago...
For a helmet... I have had IRH {International}, Tipperary Sportage {currently} and Ovation for everyday schoolers. My "show helmet" was overkill in price and black velvet... not good for you or needed. So, Tipperary Sportage is light on the head, many vent holes and comes in several colors to choose. Mine sits down low on my skull for what is comfortable to me full-coverage.
I dislike immensely any Troxel helmet I've tried. They fit round skulls and mine I guess is more oval...so uncomfortable.I do not like "dial-fit" helmets, period! On me, if I were to come off and land on my back and smack my head...I would be smacking right onto that dial..to me just not good design or safety feature. I refuse to spend more than a $100 for any "schooling" helmet. All helmets must be certified and meet the exact same rigorous testing to be certified... I will find in a price I can afford a helmet comfortable on my head so it will get worn not collect dust! Most of my helmets were actually under $75.00 I also will never buy a used helmet regardless of someone telling me "I never fell or dropped it!"...not going there..it is my head and life I look to protect...
So glad you are going to go back to riding and again try English... Even more proud you are doing it with new apparel and safety conscious... Thank-you for that!!
Now, happy shopping and then ENJOY!!

www.statelinetack.com/item/devonaire-ladies-versailles-breeches/SLT650259/ i would go with a better quality with more stylish additions. and if you want to get breeches than get two, of course they need to be broken in but keep one for your everyday riding and one pair for shows. and go with the beige. or havana brown as for helmets the breathable adjustable head band are the best. but again for showing the black is the best. the college girls seem to be wearing these, do not go inexpensive with a helmet. the better ones are better for a reason. www.statelinetack.com/item/lami-cell-elite-helmet/E012812/and hurray you are going to take lessons. you will be happy that you are getting back into the horse world and english is fun.

I have a very nice Tipperary helmet that LOOKS like a Charles Owen but cost about 1/4 the price. I like Kerrits breeches best, they are a reasonable price and feel great.

I like Toughrider and Kerrits to school in. Greenhawk has some cheap schooling breeches as well for around $40. Kerrits also makes "riding tights" which I have never had the desire to try, but look like they are designed to help stay cooler.
As for helmets I am luke warm on the tipperary helmets, I don't find they hold up as well. I currently have an Ovation and a Troxel (not the dial a fit) and like them both.
Glad to hear you are getting back into riding.

Toughrider and Kerrits are great for schooling. I really like smartpak's piper breeches as well. They are super nice. In terms of helmets - I love my IRH. It is super comfy, has nice air flow and is just a generally really nice helmet. www.smartpakequine.com/pt/irh-ath-ssv-helmet-6206^My helmet

Congratulations MM! I just took delivery on my second Tipperary Sportage but LA hot and MN hot are two totally different things and I don't see how any helmet could be cool without losing protection, especially LA. Perhaps then a cooling management plan to every so often remove the helmet and cool your head with wet cloths and put those freezer packs inside your helmet. Just a thought.
If I thought I'd look good in breeches I'd buy a pair because they'd fit under my chaps better but good heavens the world has enough problems to deal with these days.

I like the Kerritt jods too, you do need to try helmets on, I wanted a troxel bad as it was so funky but it fit horrid, ended up the IRH fit me best, I do much prefer the british helmets though, the velvet ones, they fit much deeper and I could wear them all day plus I much prefer a chin strap but the brands I like are not available to try on over here and your head would sweat where you are as less ventiliation.
Hear you on the jods, I have 3 pairs I brought with me from scotland, hope they fit me again one day!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I stopped by the riding shop Saturday but they weren't open. I honestly am not even sure the store is still open but will try to call on Tuesday when they are supposed to be open again.
I stopped by Tractor Supply to try on the Troxel helmets they have there but none fit right. Apparently it seems like I have more of an oval head and those helmets were for round heads.
I shall keep looking and let you know what I find.

I was just looking around the internet. I am so disappointed by all the companies that now require you to pay return shipping if something doesn't fit. I did find riding warehouse that has free returns and a fairly nice size selection of helmets and breeches. I think I will go to my local tack store to try some things on but will see if it is cheaper to order online (this particular tack store carries the nicer end of things).

Yes, thats a good idea, I got burned with adams return shipping, never again:( The kerritts jods though if you get summer ones are quite stretchy, I have both medium and large pairs that fit good:)....I vary between a 27-30 inch waist

I did see that Smartpak doesn't charge return shipping either but their selection is not as big as riding warehouse. But I will look at them too once I figure out what sizes I need to order.

My old helmet is an IRH "skunk helmet" and my new one is a charles owen. I love love both of them!! Still used them both too. My charles owen travels with me for lessons and the other stays at the farm when I ride Sheldon. For breeches I've gotten all the pairs I own at greenhawk. I've never been disappointed either

Just wondering what size breeches you need. i have two in the closet that i will never wear one is blue the other tan with saddles on them for fun. they are both 32 medium height. i am 5foot 2 and wear size 10 normally in jeans if that is a help to determine your size.

Thanks Jo. I'm really not sure what size I need which is why I wanted to go to a store and try on a few pairs. Yours may be a bit short for me (I'm 5'10") but I will keep your offer in mind once I find out my size.

Me too Lip. Both of those Ovations seem to have really good reviews overall.

I like both of the Ovations, the last one the best I think. They should both work just fine for Stadium and Dressage.
This is my Troxel(the plain black one, lol I'm a minimalist I guess: greenhawk.com/wdItemDesc.asp?strilhID=Web&strmdNumber=DRC6939&stricSKU=DRC6939
Edited to add: This might be one model newer than mine actually. It says it has dial fit, but mine doesn't. It does have an adjustable harness, but its with straps and not a dial.
