Those horses are so lucky to have you.
I am glad to hear that Duke is progressing so well and has done so well under your diligent care in such a short time.
You really should be proud of yourself.
I think you will have a real 'diamond in the rough' with him!

Some new photos of Duke....
We are slowly getting the weight on....
Tomorrow I go ride him for the first time on trails....the test has arrived. My neighbor, her friend and I hit the trails early. We, the experienced riders will find out if Duke is as good as we think he will be... If he remains as laid-back and quiet on trails as he is normally at home we will have a blue ribbon WINNER......
Crash helmet already packed and I will be wearing it for just in case!! Will update more tomorrow....

He looks great. goes to show what horse care does to a horse that has been neglected, and good luck with the ride, just remind yourself to breath and do not expect too much from you or him on your first day out. just a little walk and perhaps a trot only if you are ready.

Honestly, I am a little nervous of what tomorrow brings. Crash helmet will be worn as will full length chaps regardless of the temps...stick'em power you know.
I have only walked and trotted Duke so far. He listens and is lazy actually at home in the 6 acres of pasture field I've been riding in... Tomorrow no spurs and we see if he stays quiet, needs to be woken up some spurs or no need of those spurs but a stronger hand to hold him back.
I will be riding him tomorrow in my pelham snaffle with a rein only on the curb ring. He listens better to curb pressure than a snaffle rein {plows through that! } Once we see how he listens I have some different choices of bits to try on him to find what he like and responds to best. All loaned to me for trying... This guy will ride with a bit though... Tomorrow I will be riding between the other 2 riders when we start out so have a "catch rider" close by in case I need it....
I am so looking forward to doing this, although cautious I am...

He's looking great! That topline is always the last place the weight goes. Good luck tomorrow. I'm sure all will be great!

Duke is STAYING!!!! All my doubts are gone...
He was fabulous today. Nothing upset him nor set him off. He was easy to handle, very easy to load on the trailer, a quiet ride in the trailer and then rode fabulously. To start off the day I rode like Michael does and he was a total babysitter and confidence builder. Then I rode for me...we walked, trotted, cantered and then I literally turned him loose and we ran flat out to see if he would pull up...He did!! What a huge stride and powerful motor...
Such a good boy!!
So...now I buy him a really nice leather halter with his name plate on it as all our horses have... .... A keeper!!

I am excited for Michael too.... And for me....
Now I sell Chance for good. Michael is already attached to Duke, and is finally good with Chance leaving. Chance is a very unique horse in attitude and affection.... But he deserves a home where he can shine brightly doing what he does best. We are not that home although we tried to be. So, the hunt is now on to find that right home for him. I will so miss him, but he deserves better than what we can help him to accomplish. ...

HL4L- I was holding my breath waiting to hear how your ride went. When I say "He was Staying" I almost cried. I am so happy for Michael and for you. It will be hard to let Chance go but there is a family out there for him and Duke looks amazing- and if he rides quiet after all of the good food you have given him then he is a good boy.
I am so happy for Duke and for your family.

I am so very happy to hear how well it went and that Duke is staying! What a lucky horse to have landed in such a wonderful and caring place.
I am glad to hear your son has warmed up to Duke and is willing to let Chance go to a place more suited to his uniqueness.
Happy dances all around!

Took these today just a short time ago of Duke....we're getting their!!And one of my husbands horse.... We just returned from a riding lesson for our son. This horse is his "new" competition horse for this year while we rehab and work on Dukes training... A very wet horse from his rinse-off of sweat...

He is looking wonderful. it takes a long time to get a horse in condition after not being ridden or fed properly. sometimes up to a year. good job.

I think he is looking great. Getting weight on the topline is such a slow process. Your hubby's horse is a cutie too!
