A gal at the barn today thought it would be a neet idea if those crib toys could be made for horses Something to think about. Buckets on strings suspended near each other so he could "stack" them or just bang 'em around.

That's a good Idea! Today Sheldon got his stitches out today, he seems to be healing nicely. 2 more days of stall rest and out he goes! I can try and lunge*lol him if I find a suitable area not too buried with . I really don't want that opening up. Oh the plus, the vet gave us some sedation for when he gets turned out. I have a feeling he will loose his... uh... Shirt LOL had to cancel today's lesson due to the vet coming at the same time But oh the bright side I got Gracie checked quickly and some blood pulled so we can get her tested for Cushings <--- I might be making a post about that one!

Yea, good for Sheldon.
I know you guys are anxiously awaiting spring, but I am getting anxious for you. It is going to be so much fun 8Dwhen the weather breaks, and we can all get started, working in earnest, and sharing photos and ideas.
I can't wait.

Lose his shirt huh? I'm not sure what that means, unless you mean If you lunge (or lunch for that matter) a fast walk will be okay for sure. If it bleeds a little it'll be okay, you'll be able to tell. Good luck on the Cushings test and everything.

Oh ya sheldon will probably be galloping all up and down the field when I let him out. That's kinda why I'm hoping to lunge him a bit because I would rather get some sillies out before he's back in galloping around with the other horses.
Today Ollie and Irish where rearing and playing with each other while taking breaks from booking it around the field with the rest of the heard! Our heard is pretty active and playful... I really don't want Sheldon getting hurt again!!!

LOL He's going to be turned out on Saturday so I can watch/video tape him!! Today I must say his bobo is looking pretty good, I'll have to take pictures of that one too. I lunged sheldon in the driveway today at the walk/trot. It was extremely cold and windy and he did really well. He was tossing his head around a lot at first and was pretty spunky but he never took off on me which I sorta was expecting. No explosion!! Yay!

Alrighty! So Sheldon's turn out went great he slept inside a few nights to get him back into the grove of things and now he's back on 24/7 turn out. The heard is definitely picking on him, Ollie and Gracie are the worse! They are definitely trying to move up and take sheldon's place in the heard. This is what his bobo looks like now I want to scrub it badly but I really don't want to take the scabs away! The scab has some pieces of dirt stuck to it but so far it looks like it's healing well so I don't want to mess with it if that make sense. So when I first turned him out, I gave him the trank as the vet suggested and honestly it worked perfectly. Instead of having sheldon book it around the field dangerously, he casually loped around LOL. He was actually pretty silly, I took some videos hopefully I can get one to upload. One of the first things he did was climb the little mountain we have in the field. It was actually pretty neat he was trotting up and down it and the one time he actually loped down it. He did it with such ease and calmness and I immediately had envisioned us doing cross country one day LOL. Anyways I'll keep fighting with photobucket to upload my Video!! If it doesn't work I'll have to do the youtube route

I love that he attacks the giant but runs from the pony! Shows you who is boss out there. He sure looks happy though.

So it's been a while since I've been on!!!! Working full time got me pretty busy!
So Sadly, I haven't been able to work Sheldon as much as I would like. It's a bit disappointing but every time I have gone out to ride he always amazes me.
For the one trail ride, I had a rider for all the horses (Irish, Genie, Sheldon, Ollie and even little Gracie). Sadly because Genie can be so naughty I was not willing to put someone else on her. So I put a young lady on Sheldon. She's a 12 year old girl but she has horses of her own and has been riding as long as she could walk type of thing. She's in love with him now, which is nice but he was perfect for her! He was an angel on the tail and she was even able to trot him in the outdoor too. It was kinda nice because I feel like my training with him is on the right track after that if that makes sense.
Then on Saturday was an other big milestone for us, I went on our very first Solo trail ride. To top it off the property is pretty flooded this time of year so their are big puddles all over the trails. The biggest puddle is a good 40-50 feet long and in some spots almost 2 feet deep. Sheldon would just stop before the puddles and I would let him sniff/analyze the situation. Afterwards it didn't take much encouragement to get him going through. We even seen a partridge on the trail, he didn't care less about it! Only thing I wasn't too fond of was that once we where in the direction of the barn he was pacing pretty much the entire time. I had to half halt the while time. Made him stop a few times and wait, did circles just to distract him a little but he had a one track mind. So on the way back I took an other little trail and that helped get his mind back a bit.

What a great update! I'm so glad to hear he is doing so well for you (and that it is translating to him doing well for others). Rushing on the way home is something most horses do but as you found out, is pretty easy to deal with. You will have him walking calmly home in no time. I know Lip recently dealt with this with one of her horses and she is doing great now (last I heard).
So GOOD JOB!!!!

An update!! So this summer had been insanely busy with showing and working full time and just being a mom! Sheldon sadly I didn't get the chance to work with Sheldon as much as I wanted to this summer but luckily I have a young lady volunteering at my barn 2-3x a week who has been just lunging him for me (thank goodness!). So he's been getting some exercise just not by me. Well this week I was able to make some extra time to get out to my moms farm and we rode 3 times this week!!! Finally! It felt so nice to be on my horse. He is so amazing and has been responding so well to training. I've been working with leg yielding under saddle at the walk and he's great! We've been doing a bunch of exercises and he's just wonderful I was even able to do haunches in and shoulder in with him!!!!! I couldn't believe it!!!! The first day we attempted we where able to do haunches in and day two he was able to do both! This horse mama is definitely proud!!!! then yesterday we worked on collecting and lengthening our stride mostly at the walk and starting at the trot. He's not really good at collecting the trot but it will come with time. We did a smidge of cantering but that's not my focus just yet. It will all come with time! I'm hoping to start trailer in lessons before winter again and get him going good.

Great job! He is such a good looking horse and you look great on him. You should feel very proud of your accomplishments with him.
It may just be the angle but it looks like you could shift that saddle back a few inches to fully free up his shoulder.
