So took him out this morning, just out of driveway met one of my hay guys hauling a boat, stood and spoke to him for 10mins, Ira stood perfectly, off we went, it was garbage day so bins and bags everywhere, he looked at them but no spooking, cars went past, one did not slow or even move over and he was fine, he spooked at a bush and got a whipping and a bump in the face, behaved after that, a few more bumps for ignoring my leg as he was daydreaming and wandering, he was good, lots of stopping, backing up, trotting, stopping, backing up, anything I could do to annoy him, no reaction other than some head raising when backing, Ill work on that, BUT then the wind was blowing in my face on the way back and I couldnt heat the traffic as good to be ready for it, but I wasnt worried too much as he had been fine, so suddenly I realise a truck is passing us pretty close and slow, Ira tenses and as its level I see its got a huge RV on the back, Ira starts doing some weird piaffe on the spot thing then backs up I give him his head say easy and he stops, it passes, he walks on, hes a bit rattled for a bit after that but that was it, to me his reactions were nothing, I took the whip and I was annoying him constantly, brought him back and washed him down and he stood like a lamb, for sure Ill get him out as much as I can, all I can think is hubby is hanging onto his mouth too much and when Ira backs up hes not giving, hes using them like handlebars, something to work on, more!

Ira loves and respects you and know that you will get after him. he knows his stuff. perhaps hubby needs some lessons on how not to yank and pull back and how to just relax on the horse not to make him tense. a few rides in the paddock or you acerage before going out on the road.

I think Ira is feeding off of hubby's insecurities. So when Ira makes a tiny step in the wrong direction, hubby is getting nervous that Ira is going to do something silly and it just cycles around. I do think more rides in the paddock are a good idea and maybe bring some scary things to get Ira looking around a bit so hubby can learn to deal with it better.

I agree. Hubby is giving him the wrong cues and then overdoing the cues when he gets panicky. And he gives off the wrong energy.

Some horses know their jobs so well that they aren't bothered by riders who don't. Other horses no matter how well they know their job they can't help but react. Ira is so lucky he has you to show him the way.
