So Ira is Isis half brother, same sire, he is huge, tall and solid, nice temperament, has a moustache!
He was broke at 2 years old, young female trainer, did good job in short time, I went on a few trail rides with her with him and he was good, bit lazy though.
Brought him home, rode him a fair bit that next summer and he was very good, perfect in traffic, spooked at nothing, bit lazy though unless you carried a whip.
Then I got busy with Isis, sigh, so I made the decision to find someone to put miles on Ira, first trainer couldn't saddle him, he went bronc, no kidding, I had rode him the day before, the next day I was crapping my pants but I got on and took him out on the road no problem, found another trainer, she saddled him perfect, got on, he bucked her off and off he bronced, she worked with him for a couple weeks then finally managed to ride him, everything was going good, then one day after maybe 2/3 months she came back leading him, I asked what happened, she said he went crazy and flipped out and she had to get off, Ira doesn't do crazy, so then the next time she was here I sneakily watched, she went to take him up field as she was now scared to go on road, he stopped and pinned his ears, naughty nap, he gave a tiny buck when she smacked him and she turned him round brought him into round pen and just walked him around, I told her I didn't need her anymore.
When she left I saddled him up again and went to get on him, now Ira stood like a rock no reins to mount, he was awful, grabbing the bit, moving off, head up, so I slapped him and faced him into fence, got on, God, he was horrid, his mouth agitated, unhappy, I didn't do much, I was angry and confused.
I started riding him a little here and there, he was getting better but still not happy in the mouth, dentist said no issues, then it was winter, then again last year I was tied up with Isis so I got on Ira maybe once, managed to get hubby sitting on him once too which is a big deal as he wouldn't let him on for weeks, took a lot of work!
So, now we are up to date, a couple weeks ago I decided to check he was still broke lol!...brought saddle out, he looked at it with wide eyes, saddled him up, put bridle on, his bit munching starts, I used a kk ultra snaffle with link, took him a little walk nothing fancy he was ok but tense, I was in a hurry that was it.
Isis left Sunday, so I took Ira out Monday I think, he was better to saddle this time, stood nice to mount, very very nappy, refused to walk close to log pile never mind past it, refused to go down a tiny hill and the way he was acting I didn't push it so I just walked him round a path did a few back ups, turns as he's forgotten a bit and then I got off, all the time he was agitated in the mouth, I can't feel much sharpness and his wolf teeth were removed before but vet is out wk Monday.
Today it was cold and I was busy, so I decided to lunge him, I don't have a flat area really but I was only walking and trotting so found a decent small spot, this time I used Isis old happy mouth continental snaffle, he seemed happier in it but I didn't ride him so we will see what he's like when Im on his back, if it is his mouth or the rider he's unsure of, he did good, just worked on walk, trot, whoa from trot, by the end of 20 mins session he was stopping on a dime for whoa from trot, he's very stiff and doesn't want to work on the right rein.
I suppose this is more of a diary, but if anyone as advice on things to work on before I ride him again(we all know my groundwork is zero!)I would appreciate it, I will carry a whip next time I ride see if I can make him go where I want, he kinda gets dead leg when he freezes.
Re NHG advice on walking Dax the route I ride I think I will walk Ira tomorrow past his spooky log pile, not something I would normally do but I guess if it works, no harm!
Looking forward to working with Ira, he likes to please and has not got a mean bone in his body, he was a lot more forward going last year so hoping he's past the lazy stage, I'm hoping we have suitable snow this year and not too cold so I can get hubby on him and at least if he falls off it won't hurt much!
