When we tacking up for my so called ride. BO asked how old Riley was, I said about 12, she thought younger. Also commented on his curiosity was like a 3 year old. Now, I've always loved that about Riley. But have to admit sometimes..... He tried to untie himself from the bench (it was just looped and first time he's been tied in years), picked up the bridle and shook it around, picked up pad, tried to pick up saddle, knocked over some else's tack box trying to pick things up from it and it was under the bench, picked up halters lying there, tried to pick up my helmet. Tried to take brush from me. Untacking, he knocked over someone's coffee, and in my world that is enough to go to war over. Again tried to take things from other person's tack box, again with the halters.
Although at times it can be a little annoying, especially when I see other horses just standing there.
A wheelbarrow sitting there, "oh hey, what's that? Let's check it out" A bucket "that looks interesting". "what's that you're carrying, let me hold that for you" "I can steer give me the reins" "Are you sure the halter DOESN'T go in my mouth, cause I think it does"
Over the years, rake, some garbage blown into field, a tarp, a lead lines/halters on a post, a sled, (yes a sled), lawn cushions, stools, all have to be picked up. Water troughs are meant for playing it. People, "do I know you?" Mounting block, anything on the mounting block. One day recently it was like a blood hound, head to ground sniffing, I let him go where he wanted, sniff, sniff, sniff, oh it's some dog poo, move along nothing to see here.
Is this a bad thing? Not that it really matters because it is something I like and does amuse me most of the time. But like my horse, I am curious.

I like a horse with a personality. Mine is similar and I'd much rather have that than no personality.

Agree Mine all are curious. Sometimes they actually get in the way and I have to shoo them off. But they are right back in the middle of things. I have always heard horses are afraid of pigs. But mine will go up to their pen and nose around . I think curiosity is a good thing. Makes them a braver horse.

While I do like a horse with a personality, it can go to far imo. I don't think I could tolerate all of that. Maybe just one or two things while tacking up but the constant getting into stuff would drive me nuts. Also, I like my horses to ground tie (not that I go far but enough to be able to brush and tack if needed without being tied). If they were wanting to check everything out, that would be pretty impossible.
Now I do allow them to check out new things while riding. I do think it helps keep them from getting too spooked when something new pops up.
But to each his own. If it doesn't bother you, than no problem.

One thing, it seems, Riley is very good at, is giving every one a good chuckle. Especially, with the way you narrate his curiosity.

I also like a horse with personality who is also interested in what is going on around it, but I also agree that there is a point when it becomes too much. For example, I don't let Benny put his mouth on things. He can be interested in that halter, he can sniff it as long as he is not invading my space or getting in my way, but he cannot nose it or put it in his mouth, these behaviors earn a correction. When I am leading him has to keep up, and his head stays where I want it. If something dramatic happens he can look, for a moment, but then must keep going. I know a few horses who started out with well intentioned 'personality' that later became pushy annoyances. I am not saying this is the case with you, just something I have noticed over the years. Best of luck

Best of luck Yes, some of those we have had, but seem to ended that. No longer fights to eat grass or eat while being led (tripping over his own nose). Fighting or pulling me. Can't say he's pushy, he doesn't invade persay, he'll stretch his neck out to sniff at someone, does not walk into them, he stops and stretches, then you can step to him. While chatting with BO, he took the lunge whip from me, "my turn b*tch" lol. He needs to work on the 'snap' though. I think if he was going to get to pushy invade space he would have done it by now. He has never been a horse that does that.

I think Riley is being very inquisitive because that is a new place and he is exploring all items and things. after a while it will be boring to him and he will over look all that stuff. he is smart and perhaps smarter than the average horse. way funny. he is. 884530

I'm not trying to hijack the thread but I noticed how much Mingiz's horse looks like the TWH I used to own and my friend now has. This is him.

I got such a chuckle at this thread! DC, the way you describe Riley's antics was great! He sounds like a very curious boy. Zena is the same way, always wanting to investigate everything! When I'm working with Sis in the round pen, heaven forbid I lay anything down outside the round pen or on the rails, because Zena will take it! She took my tarp and started playing with it, she picked up my camera bag (with camera inside) and started walking off with it in her mouth, she took Sis's bridle, carried it off, put teeth marks in the brand new reins, and started taking the bridle apart! She also likes to untie herself. She doesn't go anywhere after she's untied, but still... It can be a bit of a pain to have such a smart, curious horse, but you just gotta love 'em. They keep you laughing!

Yeah, he can be, I still remember him looking around with the stool stuck on head when he was 4.

He sounds like a interesting horse. I prefer horses like that better then "quite ones". I use to own 18 y old mare who was like a yearling. People could not belive how old she was when I would say her age. Horses with personality are much more fun to be around.
