OK, I struggle to eat veg so doubt I could be a vegetarian or a vegan but am becoming increasingly po'd about the amount of videos of animals being treated like shit at slaughter houses, I stopped buying butterball products after seeing that video, I am careful not to buy products from GM companies(can't believe how much that limits what you can buy), I do buy organic whenever I can, now this morning I see the video of the pigs being abused at a plant, wtf, I like bacon, no, I love bacon, I am also fussy with taste as over here the bacon is much different from that in the UK and Im struggling to find organic bacon like I like:(
This is prob sounding like a vent which I suppose in a way it is, I just can't believe in this day and age that animals are treated so badly at slaughter houses, apparently there was an inspector agent even present when these pigs were being kicked and beaten and shocked, sigh, when do we as humans become so detached that feelings are lost, it's hard to avoid these videos too, if it's not on facebook it's on morning TV, makes me very sad.
I always wondered how people who keep their own animals then have them slaughtered for them to eat could do it but at least they are treating them well and know they had a happy if shorter life, kudos to all you vegetarians out there, I have been eating a lot more fish and shrimp recently, not sure if it's any less cruel but you don't tend to hear of people abusing fish and shrimp, hopefuly.

I know how you feel. I watched the movie "Fast Food Nation", I had to close my eyes and turn it off for the last 5 minutes but even still, it has caused me to avoid red meat as much as possible.
I couldn't be a veg either, I don't like many veggies. I had a friend who eats those Morning Star products - not exactly what they are made of, mostly soy protein I think (is that the same thing as tofu?). She really likes them and I am tempted at the store to try them. They have "chicken" patties and "corn dogs" and all sorts of things that *look* good.
I'm still not sure I could raise my own meat but I do think you bring up a good point about knowing that they are living humane, healthy, happy lives until it is their time.

I know I could never be a vegetarian, even though I like the idea. I have many friends who are and respect them for their resolve, but I enjoy meat way too much. I also try to eat organic as often as possible, although it is expensive and much easier said than done. I am lucky in a sense that my family has a very good relationship with several Hutterite colonies, so we get a lot of out meat through them. I am not sure it is organic, but I do think they take greater care with their animals than a slaughterhouse would. I can't bring myself to watch the pig video, or others like it. I just make note of the companies and do my best to never purchase their products again. It is sad thing.

There is not enough accountability. and the idiots that do the inhumane acts are cowards. they become cold to the fact that every day they look into the eyes of an animal and kill it or harm it. More video cameras should be installed in these facilities and the link should go right to the federal food and drug administration for viewing. and if one person kicks. shocks or beats an animal that plant should be sued . fined or closed up. i will not view those films as i see them and hear the animals scream for days. and on fb i block people that show and share those links. NO i am not ignorant about the hurt the animal feels and i know it goes on. i lobby as much as i can to help the animals and one day the politicians will wake up and help those that can not speak for themselves.

I tried to be vegetarian for a year and ended up in hospital because of lack of knowlege how to eat and stay strong and healthy. I don't eat bought meat from store, and don't eat nothing but chicken and sometimes pig meat. But that is all from our jard where animals live happy lifes and are put to sleep before they are prepared for consummation. I feel very guilty doing even that. When I could buy my own food, I am going to switch to being a vegetarian again.

I am not a vegetarian either, but I eat a lot less meat than I did. There are two large cattle feeder operations where I live. The processing plant is in another town. I would occasionally work the front desk, at the Dr. office. There were big windows, that looked out onto Main Street. All morning, I would see trucks full of cows, going one direction, and come back empty, later in the day. I couldn't help but think about the number of cows who lost their lives every single day.
I have discovered that Ham and beans, taste just as good without the ham, when served with cornbread, and chili, is just as spicy without the meat. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and egg salad sandwiches make a great quick lunch, although I am not sure that the chickens used to produce the eggs are treated totally humane.
Years ago my 4-H club took a tour of the processing plant. I didn't go!!! They were even taken onto the kill floor. The kids were told not to speak to the killers. When a rough looking man did his job, one of the girls screamed and burst into tears. The killer laughed at her. It was very disturbing to some of the members. I am so glad my parents were wise and didn't make me go along.

Wow, that sounds horrific, imagine making kids visit it:( My hubby went to a slaughter plant when he was a 16 year old apprentice, he said it was horrific and never ate or lamb since and try's not to think about cows being slaughtered. I only buy organic roaming eggs. I only hope the organic chicken people use nice slaughter places, if there are any:( The butterball Turkey video killed me, I can still see those little chicks:(

I agree, that to be able to have a cold heart for continuing to kill is strange. i do not eat veal or lamb, and will eat beef about two times a week. mostly fish and veggies are on the menu around my house.
