My baby that is 24 years old and the son of my arabian stallion that has passed came in to breakfast with a football size gaping hole in his neck, i would post a photo but it is too gruesome. called the vet and she was only able to stitch the top. of it because it was loose skin and could be reattached. the rest of it was not stitchable because she was afraid when he moved his neck from side to side it would open the stitches. and forget a neck cradle and keeping him quiet in a stall. So tid bits. is being nursed with aluminall spray. antibotics. and banamine a person never knows what is in store for them when owning animals.

Ouch!! The things our kids get into.. Hope all goes well in the healing process. Can you put a compress bandage on him. Go around his neck with vet wrap. May help with proud flesh. I know it's a hard area but I would try it. Would also help keep it clean. Poor baby.... Never a dull moment with you....

Oh my! Yikes!! I'm wondering, as mingiz mentioned, whether or not you could put a gauze pad over the wound and vet wrap his neck to at least keep the area clean? Good luck.

Gauze will stick like tissue to glue. and when the alu spray goes on it will protect it. for today i need to wash it and put biozide on it and give him his pain meds. for him to stay in a stall for a couple of days is the problem. he love being outside. but he has to stay. apparently a t post. yup one of hundreds on the property that have been there for years . thanks for the support. and min yes everyday that i wake up and no one is hurt is a good day.

Never heard of Alu spray. I always used an antibacterial on the gauze to prevent it from sticking...T-post are good and bad. I will be using them also. But plan to cap them..

I have about 1000 of those t-posts and most of those are in a tree line. it would cost alot to have them capped. the ones that are accessable to the horses in a dry lot are getting replaced. i have a feeling he was scratching ticks off his neck and he either slipped or was pushed. any way aluspray is the best. sprays on a silver coating and it allows the skin to heal and close up and no sticky goo . i recommend getting it and keeping it in your medicine chest

Oh those "T" posts. I feel your pain there. I had a gelding one time that came in for dinner with a gaping hole in his chest. He was apparently playing around and must have reared up and come down on a "T" post, basically impaling himself in the chest. The vet that treated him cleaned out the wound, put in a drain, stitched up the hole, and had me spray it with Cut Heal a couple of times a day. After a while the vet took out the drain, took out the stitches, and all was well. He was very fortunate that he healed up without even a scar! All of our pastures and dry lot areas are fenced with "T" posts, but after that happened I went out and bought several bags of the rubber caps and capped every single "T" post I could. The rubber caps were cheap, and it was definitely cheaper than another vet bill for another "T" post related injury. I'm sure my property is considerably smaller than yours though, and I had far fewer posts to cap, but for me it was the way to go.

I have washed the site again and i sprayed it with the alu spray, and i turned him out with the group. he is due to be sprayed again tomorrow so perhaps i will photo the area. (after it is sprayed) and share with you all. He is not the most agreeable horse to be kept in for any length of time. and 4 days was just enough hoofprints

The neck wound is doing great. my helper and i took out the 10 stitches from the flap and washed it up and sprayed it again with the alu spray and it looks great.
the gelding with the eye removal has decided that he can not stay where he is not wanted, he is being pushed around by the other horses and his best friend before the accident is not allowed to talk to him. sooooo he is on my lawn during the day and at night he is in a stall. as it is hunting season and there is no grass for them to eat on the pasture the horses are in holding dry lots for the winter, so there really is no place for the gelding to go hide and for his safety and my peace of mine he is a lawn ornament for the winter. thanks for asking

Wow, really is hunting season that dangerous round there?
Glad he's healing up, we just got rid of about 50 metal t posts this summer and re did it with hotwire, I always worried about the t posts.
