Chloe is our pitbull. When we got her the previous owner said she had food allergies because areas of her skin that would get pink. We soon found out that it was stress related, not food related. She'll still get a pink tummy or paws on occasion but it's rare and I just put Aveeno on it and it goes away. My daughter has had her while I've been sick. Partly because she wanted company for her dog and partly because Chloe is very affectionate but is a solid dog that will push hard against you when she wants cuddles and I was too weak to push her away. She also likes to lie across us and lean into our tummy and with my ostomy and wound being there it wasn't a good situation.
Now that I'm better we have Chloe back but she's having skin issues again. She's lost some hair but not in patches, it's just thinner all over. She's black and I can see her skin. She also gets bad dandruff and smells bad. I remember seeing a show where this woman had hairless dogs and she said she has to bath them every day or they smell bad so I think the smell problem is from having less hair. Giving her fish oil every day seems to be helping the dandruff and I'm sure her hair will eventually grow back in thicker.
In the meantime does anybody have any suggestions for anything else that might help? I was looking at our hair conditioner for the horses and wondering if that would help but I worry that she'll make the couch oily when she lays on it. I don't want to bath her because that's one of her fears and she's heavy and I can't do it myself. Is there some sort of powder that's hypoallergenic I could try that might make her smell better? Please don't suggest that I take her to the vet, this isn't bad enough to do that and she was tested for skin issues a couple of years ago. I just want something to make her more pleasant to be around while she regrows her hair. I think she was just upset that she could hear us upstairs and not be with us. My daughter's dog still had to be crated even with Chloe with her because she was still misbehaving so Chloe was kind of alone.

Hmmm, I don't know much about dogs and even less about skin issues but it seems to me that giving her a bath would dry it out more. What about Gold Bond powder? Not the one for the foot but the general one (in the gold bottle). It is supposed to be good for all sorts of things.

If she has allergic reaction to food than perhaps she needs to be on a cooked diet. i think the high protien and all the additives in dog food are horrible to the dogs, we had rotties with hot spots or loss of alot of hair. and i changed their food and the hair was growing in fast and never had the problem again. you can try mane and tail shampoo for horses. i am sure you have checked for fleas, if not than take care of that also. smileys-dogs-171634

She doesn't have a food allergy but that's what the previous owner thought. No fleas, we're lucky where we live, they're rare. I was a teenager the last time we had a dog with fleas. And she doesn't have hot spots, just less thick hair all over. I'm sure she'll be fine now that she's not stressed or anxious but in the meantime she's kind of smelly. I think she has dog BO.

I am really watching this, because Micah has some serious doggy BO too. She is old, and I also think she might have a grass allergy. Anyway she seems to be doing a lot better on the Benadryl. She still has very thin hair and is very stinky. I do hope someone can shed some light on thinning hair and dog BO, and why the two things seem to go hand and hand. I am curious about the gold bond.

I haven't been to the store yet so I haven't tried anything. She's very content to be upstairs with us again. I've missed her. Pitbulls often have skin issues for some reason. They're bad for getting skin tags, too, and Chloey has a few on her belly. My husband plans to take her in the shower with him this morning and use baby shampoo on her. I might try waterless dog shampoo. At least she's not itchy or anything. It's just me that is bothered by it, I have a sensitive nose and I'm worried that this next round of chemo will make me smell sensitive again and her smell with really bother me. People on chemo can throw up just from smelling someone's perfume. This chemo is going to be stronger than the last time.

A food that has fish meal or fish oils in it many times makes a dogs skin smell...I don't know why. If you feed garlic to a dog {supposed to help deter fleas} I know it makes their body put off a odor that repels the fleas....{we tried it with our golden...she loved the garlic tablets but still suffered from fleas } Skin also "smells" offensive sometimes if their is a bacterial infection somewhere in the body, odors escaping through the hair follicles.
We have had labs or dogs with "long ears"...they get a nasty odor that is easily noticed if they get a ear infection...
You positive your dog wasn't "skunked".... My dog loved to play chase till she got skunked....now she sees a skunk and runs the other way. Learned her lesson, thankfully! Once was quite enough! I do have a fantastic recipe that really works if anyone needs it...no more odor.
I would offer you a nose mitten or clothes-pin if it gets worse, hopefully you find what is the culprit soon.

Aw poor stinky Chloe! Some dogs are so emotionally sensitive, and she was probably so worried about you. I hope it resolves itself.
I don't really have any ideas to help. My son's dog had problems with her fur growing back after a surgery. I think after testing the vet thought it was thyroid/hormone levels. She started on some supplement that helped. Doesn't sound like that's Chloe's problem though.
I use baby shampoo for my pooch, but then I know you said bathing is difficult.
I do use sheets and blankets on my couch to easily throw them in the wash if things get smelly. However my dog is fairly easy to give a bath to.
Good luck

Thanks you guys. She's not so smelly now, it's almost gone, and is happy. The dandruff is gone, too. I think she's going to be fine.

I do love my Chloey dog! She's lying there chewing her nails right now, silly girl. At night she sleeps cuddled up with Bella. Only Brodie as allowed on my bed now because he's the only one that doesn't push at me. He sleeps close but not right up against me and he's light enough for me to move him if I have to.

Thank you DG! The flash makes her eyes look bald. It's a common thing in pitties to have thinner hair around their eyes. We had her checked for demodex mange when we first got her because of it. The poor little thing, they take a blade edge and scrape the top layer of skin off and test it. Her eyelid was bleeding. But she sat and didn't move a muscle while they were doing it and then gave the vet a lick. She's such a good girl.

I see. LOL I just thought the hair was lighter around her eyes. How about the hair around her little nose? It looks lighter too.

She has some white hairs around her nose and on her muzzle like an old dog. We got her when she was two and she's always had that.

I missed this!
How did the skin scrape results go?
I have a few clients having success with krill oil, I hate fishy dogs too, when people feed that aCana fish stink food I want to vomit!

The skin scrapes were a few years ago and nothing turned up. She gets salmon oil on her food. She's so much happier being with me and the other dogs all day and her is looking better and she smells less.
