Hi, finally made my way over here. See lots of familiar names too which is exciting. I am currently residing in Calgary and have two horses one of which is a pasture puff who lives at a friends place. That horse is my namesake and heart horse Apollo. He's an 11 year old OTTB registered as Blackburne Jack. My other horse is Benny. I bought him very recently and we are still getting to know each other, but he is super sweet and has a great mind. Benny is a 3 year old OTTB registered as Some Hand, but will be shown as Bold Prince. I've been riding and showing for about 14 years. Looking forward to being here and meeting everyone!

Welcome! jumping-horse How tall are Apollo and Benny? They both look to be at least 16hh in those pictures.

Yay, you came! I like how your boys have good bone, they look like a couple of sweeties. I love it when people adopt OTTBs. I was NorthernHorseGirl over there but it's too long and I'm long past being a girl so I shortened it.

I'm excited to be here. I was hanging on to the hope that the other site might pull out of its nosedive, but I see now that is just not going to be the case. Apollo is 17.3 hands... huge! He is a huge sweetheart though and was affectionately dubbed 'Clifford' by a few girls I used to board with because he is big, red, and follows me around like a dog. Benny is smaller (thank goodness!)he was 15.3 when I bought him, but I think he has grown and might be 16 now. Apparently he comes from a family of late bloomers who gain most of their height in their 4-5 year old year. I am lucky that they both have great bone. Benny is routinely mistaken for a quarter horse, which I find amusing. I even had to go so far as to show one lady his tattoo. She refused to believe a Thoroughbred could be so thick and so mellow! All of my horses save one, have been at least half Thoroughbred. Not sure what it is, I just click with them.

One of the quietest horse I've owned was Joey. He was an appendix. I was told that Most thoroughbreds that go back to Jet Deck, like him, are pretty mellow.

I knew Apollo looked big! I had a 17+ hand OTTB once and he was a gentle giant too (well except for when he would out of no where flash back to his racing days and bolt with me!).
That's funny about having to prove Benny was a TB (like someone else would know better than his owner!).

Welcome! I'm glad you're here! I enjoyed your posts from HT before I got banned!
Your boys are gorgeous! My last mare was an OTTB, kind of. She was sent to the track for training but never actually raced. Still took quite a bit of retraining to get her out of that mindset (her sire was in the 1981 Kentucky Derby, so running was in her blood!). I was so sure my next horse would also be an OTTB, but then I found Lucy. Even though she's registered as full QH, she's technically an appendix and is 1/4 TB, so close enough? LOL She has War Admiral & Man O'War in her bloodline, but thankfully several generations back so she's less inclined to run. She's more of a "I'll move if I have to" kinda gal! LOL

Its funny you should mention that Shadow - Apollo is bred to be a killer racehorse, lots of big names close up, both his sire and dam produced stakes winners and I think one black type winner. He is lazier than sin. I used to joke all the time that the reason they never started him in a race was because he'd be quite happy to watch the other horses run from the gate. Similar with Benny - His sire was supposed to produce some really nice racehorses, instead he produced a ton of nice sporthorses. I've met two other horses by the same sire and not only is there a strong resemblance, but they seem to have the same great mind he has too.

You guys are funny and so right.... what you refer to I have found true too.
My friends have OTTB too. One has a Spectacular Bid grandson....no desire to run, but show him a fence and he can't wait to jump it...beautiful hunter horse. What a natural.... My other friend has a son of Secretariat....lousy race horse the son was. He was beautiful with the same coppery coat and "chrome"...what a lovely dressage horse he made. Most of Secretariat immediate offspring were duds as racers but made superb riding/show and sport horses...couldn't beat them. Now a few generations later the offspring of Secretariat are again doing really well as racers... go figure.
Seems to make the rounds of good years and bad.... Personally, I think we win because we are able to own some incredibly talented bloodstock that is healthy and bred right, otherwise I know for sure I couldn't afford them. I'll take "the duds" most any day.
As for your "Benny"....bet he tops out around 16.2 -16.3....he has the looks for it in his build the picture you show. He has quite a bit of growing yet to do....

Lovely horses! I have a soft spot for OTTB's. My old horse Solar (registered as Solar Heat) used to race. He had about 15 starts but man that guy was LAZY. The only time I ever seen him get quick was running through trails lol. Then it was as if he was a different horse all together! He was out of Halo (sire) and Limbo Dance. Halo was quite a popular stallion at one point, he was known for his agression though and Solar didn't have a mean bone in his body. anyways.. Welcome to the forum

I once read that only one in seventy progeny will do as well as the sire. I always think of famous human athletes and how few of them have kids that follow in their footsteps.
