So I was playing around in the barn the other night with Sheldon and for the first time I decided to work him without using a lead rope I was kinda a magic moment for us because Sheldon has always been good for me but it's just something new that we haven't really done before (well we have with a lead rope). I also would like to teach him how to bow, the end of the video was our "attempt" Let me know what your think I am open to critiques, like I said I have a "go with the flow" type of training. He was a little sticky when I asked him to back up the first time, so we did it a second.

Look at you two go! Good job! I LOVE Sheldon. I can see his sweet demeanor in his pictures and videos. He looks like what he is, an angel of a horse. I can tell you how to teach the bow. I think I can anyway. It's much easier to show it.

Ya so far to teach him I just been giving him a treat between his front legs. Ive been tapping the treat on the inside of one of his legs to let him know that it's "here" type of thing. Not sure where to go after that! LOL I did it again last night with him and he started putting his head between his legs without me asking in hopes of getting a cookie. Such a smart boy! He is very food driven but I never hand feed him other then while attempting to do tricks.

my computor is not allowing me to play the video. this happens every once in a while. but the idea is correct on what you are doing. also if you tap his leg on the for arm he should pick up his foot. all at the same time as his nose goes between his legs. i used to grab my stallions muscle and he was taught to bow low when i just pointed to it . took time but he got the idea. and was awesome when i showed people the trick. i said bow and pointed the finger to his leg and down he went .

Yea!! That was great. I like the way you are teaching Sheldon to bow. I was trying to teach Diamond to bow by picking up a front leg, and then having her back until her knee touched the ground, but she got confused with the farrier. Well, at least I thought she might be confused. He thought, she was just being lazy and leaning on him. As usual.

We learned the bow in a clinic for teaching tricks. One part was that we had to have a snaffle bridle on and we'd pull them backwards with the reins. But first we had to lift the leg with a soft lead rope. The lead rope was put around the pastern and the leg was lifted. But the important part of that was that the lead rope was around the horse's tummy starting from the side closest to you over the back and then up to your hand. You use that hand to hold the foot up and to hold the end of the rope that's been run around the horse's chest. It makes it much easier to hold the weight of the leg if you do it that way. So it's the right hand holding the lead rope and the left hand uses the reins to pull the horse backwards a bit. This is also the start of teaching them to lie down. Which is a cool trick but my daughter's horse decided it was so fun we had to really watch him if he was standing around tacked up in the arena. He'd suddenly decide to lie down. Maybe I'll get my daughter to teach her horse to bow and take some pictures or video it.

Ya that would be awesome nhg! I tried getting to bow again last night, he did really well he was going pretty low after those treats Then after doing that a few times I attempted to get him to "come" when I whistle. I think it was actually working!! I hid in one of the stalls at one point and he came and found me (it was so cute!!!). Of course he was instantly rewarded with a cookie! (like I said, I only had feed for training tricks)
