My daughter and I were having one of our "if we ever get an acreage again" conversations and the subject of donkeys as coyote guards came up. So I have a couple of questions.
1) Can mini donkeys deal with coyotes or do they have to be regular sized ones?
2) Do all donkeys make good coyote guards or do they have to have the hatred for them already in them?
3) If a donkey hates coyotes does it necessarily hate dogs, too?
4) If so, is there a way to prevent them from going after our own dogs?
5) Are there any other kinds of wild critters that donkeys will deal with?

I can not speak for all donkeys but the one i had from the time he was 4 months old lived with the horses and he know my dogs. whether they were the rotties. gernan shephards , labs. doxi or yorkies. as the dogs came along he was territorial at first than as days went by he knew they were friends. BUT if a strange dog or coyote were on the property he would bellow and start to run and the horses would come running to the barn. . he loved the minis and would always be within their pack and he would tell them if something strange was around. he was probably 400 pounds and not that tall. about 10 hands high. but he was tough as nails, yet a cuddle bug. He was never sick, only having his hooves done and wormings and shots. and one day he just looked off. his gums were purple. he went to lay down in a stall and within 20 minutes he was gone. he was 23 years old. sorry for going on. but i needed to tell his story. he was funny. and determined to do what he wanted to do . so he was never fenced in and allowed to roam all my property all his life.

Aw, he sounds like a cutie! There are mini donkey's where we board and the babies are so friendly. They come running when people go out to them.

Most donkeys will go after a dog. Mules are worst. It's an internal instinct. Most of what I have seen here. They are standard donkeys used in the cattle herds. Some people also use Great Pyranese (sp) dogs. We have coyote's go through our back pasture and they don't bother the horses.
Jo you have a good donkey if he doesn't bother your dogs..

It's odd that it's instinct, isn't it. Thanks Mingiz.

I've seen Ira my biggest horse chasing the coyotes!
I was thinking of getting a Kuvasz for my next big dog, I know they will kill wolves etc and are beautiful family dogs:)
I'd love a mule, so expensive though, I remember seeing a picture a while back of a mule swinging a cougar by the tail, very impressive!

I saw that video and was impressed but then I heard it was fake. I don't know if it was or not. Yes, mules are pricey.

When my arabian stallion was just a foal his mother grabbed a dog that was chasing him and she swung him in the air and turned and double blasted him before he hit the ground. the other dog took off. my husband buried the dog. . so it can be done. as for the burro. he got to know the dogs that lived here but if i got a new one he would chase it. after a few days Burt realized the dog was not a stranger.
