I have an older acer that i use most times. but lately it is giving me some worry. just today it blanked out and one side of the screen got all these lines real close together the other side was a solid color. it came back on to the work i was doing. than the blank out happened again. soooo my question is how do i get all the information i have on the acer to my new windows 8 lap top. before this one crashes. i have photos and favorites. not so much work but things in enjoy reading and information i have saved over the years. 522867

I'm sure there is a better way but I used a jump drive (they are called lots of other things like thumb drives, etc). Anyway, it plugs into your usb, transfer files on to it, then plug into new computer and dump files. They have different sizes so it may take a couple of transfers depending on how much stuff you need moved.
Maybe someone else will chime in with a better way.

That is usually how I transfer stuff from an old computer to a new one too. Depending on the size of the flash drive, it may take a while, but it works.

Mistersmom is right. It's kind of hard to explain over the internet when I'm not sure what files you have and how much space you need. However, for basic info. Plug in the flash drive in the old computer. You find the folder where your important things are on the old computer, pictures, documents whatever you want to save. Right click the folder and hit copy (or you can highlight individual pictures, right click, copy). Locate your flash drive by going to "start", "my computer", it should show your original hard drive (C) and the flash drive (generally it will show the brand name of the flash drive). Click on the flash drive to open it. Then right click and paste the photos into the flash drive. On your new computer, make a new folder for your pictures. Remove the flash drive from the old computer and put it in the new one. Again go to Start, then My Computer, to find the flash drive, open it by clicking on it. Your pictures/folders should be there. Highlight them, right click and hit copy. Find your new picture folder you made, open it, right click and paste into the folder. Hopefully now the pictures are on both computers. You keep going back and forth until you have everything on both computers. After you see you have successfully put them on the new computer in their new folder, you should go back into the flash drive (start, my computer), open the flash drive and delete them on the flash drive, so that you have room now for the next transfer on the flash drive. The flash drive is just the means to transfer the files, like carrying them in a briefcase. The larger the flash drive capacity, the less times you will have to do this process, that is why the clerk asked you how many gigabytes. There are other ways to do this, but this is the least complicated. I would try it out first with one picture to be sure you've got it right, and see it safely go onto the new computer, you don't want to lose anything. Good luck

I wish I could help but I switched from my old Acer to a new one not long ago and lost a bunch of stuff. It's still on the old computer so it's not totally lost but the new one doesn't have the same programs and it won't accept the stuff from my old one. I got my pictures but lost all my email contacts and any documents. Also some of my sites lost the passwords but some were still there. The new one has Windows 8.0 which is kind of crappy. I upgraded to 8.1 which is supposed to be better but isn't much better.

NHG, I hear Windows 8 works best if you have a touch screen. My computer is not that new so I have no experience with windows 8. However.... as far as the documents, you should be able to copy those, (I'm assuming msoffice word docs)and you should be able to open them with whatever word program you have on the new computer. If not you can get a free program to open them.

The folders you do the exact same way as the photos. Right click, copy, put on the flash drive, go to new comp, paste.
As far as the favorites, what browser do you use? Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome ?

I use opera. and i was hoping all i would have to do is hit one button and swish, they would all move at one time. there are no letters. books. or other work that needs moving. 522867

Good for you using Opera! Here you go, instructions with pictures and all. Do NOT download anything on this page, just look at the instructions. (They call the flash drive a pen drive) It's basically the same process as with the pictures, but instead you are locating the file where the bookmarks are stored. en.kioskea.net/faq/11762-opera-export-import-your-bookmarks
