I don't think you need to put mats down in your entire barn unless you want to. Personally, my stalls are matted, and my tack room is matted, but the rest of my barn just has a sand/dirt floor, and it works fine for me. The way I look at it, if I ever decide to sell my place and the buyer wants the entire barn matted, then they can pay to do it. I like it just fine the way it is.

I just worry that he is going to put divots and/or holes in the new dirt/clay I am putting in. I plan on packing it but we all know how much hooves can dig things up. I guess I could try it and see if things start getting tore up I could put in the rest.

When I've got a horse tied in the aisle for grooming or tacking or whatever, they definitely tear up the sand/dirt floor a bit, but I just rake the aisle when I'm all done and it's fine. My horses don't have access to any part of my barn unless I put them there, though, so if your horse(s) have the ability to come and go inside your barn as they please, then I can see where it could be more of a problem for you to not have more areas matted.
