I have done it back in the day. It's fun but you need to know what your doing...You can barely stay on top of them(Bareback) because of the force of the water.I wanted to swim Reno in the bay but I didn't want to submerge my saddle in salt water.. But I knew he wanted too. He would go out farther than I wanted and I knew it dropped off. I have a video of my friend swimming my paly paint. I'll have to find it...

We used to swim with our horses occasionally at the barn where I rode growing up. We swam in a nearby pond. It was lots of fun until one of the horses would take a dump in the water - that would be the end of things!

Never done it and would love to try, just once.
I am so afraid of alligators or snakes though I won't get near any "open water" down here...
All kinds of nasty things by water, not all water, but I don't want my luck to run out and it be the water I am at and the incident involve me...so I will keep my feet dry and that of my horse(s).

I hear ya on that note HL4L.. I see pics from a trail forum I'm in and these people from FL. are in the waters. All I can think of is a gator eating me up...They're are to many creepy critters in FL. for me to live there...

Scary for sure! The very idea makes me nervous. I've never gone swimming with a horse, that's pretty deep, but back in the day my mare Belita and I would splash around. She'd bound through the water like a dolphin which was exhilarating as can be. I rode bareback so I didn't worry about the saddle but the leather reins were so slippery I couldn't keep a grip. If I ever did it again I'd use my braided nylon reins.

I did it once. Our instructor took us trail riding and we rode down into a deep creek/river where our horses could swim. It was fun, but it also made me a bit nervous. Besides that, I wasn't too thrilled about my saddle getting all wet. It's probably not something I would do again.

I've seen my cousin take his horses swimming on one of the islands near Grand Isle before. I've wanted to go, but haven't gotten a chance to and my own horses aren't ready to be doing that kind of stuff yet. I was riding Apollo bareback and tried to get him to cross a large, ankle-deep stretch of pasture he had JUST walked through, and he went one way, and I went the other. My uncle was laughing his behind off while I sat in a puddle and caught my wind. Guess Apollo probably won't be one for swimming lol.
