I know! I need to video with the IPad,.., it just turns into 'barn time' not IPad time. We get him tacked up, we talk 'strategy', she works him, then I work him and we end. He is doing Soooo Well,.., can't wait to trail ride this fall His lead changes were awesome!

UPDATE- Zippy (and I) had our best week ever so far with the trainer I went and rode one of her horses on Monday as a confidence builder,., Because honestly, when you ride a horse that is sooo sensitive (Zippy), with sooo many foibles (idiosyncrasies) that you start to DOUBT your own skills, it was nice to be able to get on a horse and 'JUST RIDE'
So,., riding her horse with no problem helped confirm for me that I do still have my skill, and ability to ride,., YES! With no stirrups, no less,.., Go Me!! Then, the trainer came out and worked the Zipster yesterday, and he did GREAT. So then I got on and cantered his good way, and altho I lost my right stirrup and recovered it without it turning into a RACE and the whole thing falling apart (crazy sounding I know, BUT has been my MOST FRUSTRATING problem with Zippy from day one) and I know that sounds really 'odd',.., but we were able to see that the way he moves, stiff, and bracey, on that side, k icks my foot out of the stirrup, causing the whole 'crazy stirrup recovery (me)/turn into a 'race to the finish' (Zippy)' problem.
Something to build on, and improve on,.., so YAY ME! smileys-party-370729

Sounds like you're doing great! I'm so happy for you and Zippy. There's nothing worse than lacking confidence and feeling like you've lost your riding abilities.

Glad he is progressing well!! How fast are you at getting your stirrups back? It sounds silly but thats something i practiced a lot when I first started riding. I would take my foot in and out of the stirrup repeatedly at the walk (without looking) until it became almost muscle memory. Then when I figured I mastered that, I did it at the walk, trot then eventually worked my way up to the canter and jumping. It was always a personal goal to me because there is nothing worse then panicking during a course or right before a jump because I lost a stirrup. just a tough

My problem with recovering my stirrup really has less to do with picking up the stirrup again, thats easy enough,., BUT more to do with Zippy being sooooooooo sensitive that any changes you make while in the saddle, set him off. And he REACTS by picking up speed,.., which doesn't really matter, in and of itself except at the canter, then it turns into a gallop pretty quickly! He is a handful with any speed, but has really come a long way. Things seem to be coming together and I'm focusing on the positive,..,

Sounds a bit like the problem LD was having (but in a different way....ok, maybe not, maybe the only common factor has to do with the stirrup...never mind). I think it is great for all riders to do like Shelly. Not only does it help you but often can help the horse as well not to react to the stirrup banging on them and the rider shifting to compensate and find the stirrup again. It sounds like the Zipster has some major training in his background if he is that sensitive to slight changes you make red. LOL - that can be a good thing and a bad thing but it sounds like you are both over coming it so good for you! Keep up the good work!

I thought of what happened to LD right away, too. I'd be spending time grabbing those stirrups and banging them against their sides if that was my horse's issue and trying to make it a surpise. I'd also do some longeing with just the saddle on so the stirrups flap. And I'd do some leading while I'm facing them- which they hate- and using something to tap them on the sides while walking. I remember seeing Stacey Westfall and her talking about how many people desensitize their horses while the horse is standing but not doing it while the horse is moving. I used to spend a lot of time leading horses and suddenly throwing my arms up in the air or doing anything else that might spook them.

Banging stirrups is not Zippy's problem,., he is just a HOT little horse. He has been desensitized A LOT with a lot of different experiences,., He just likes to GO, and when the opportunity presents, he takes, and GOES! 884530 He also now STOPS bc that whoa is the first thing we worked on when I realized he had a 'quick trigger' go button.
Thats what I mean when I say, he likes to go,., He's smart, he knows what he's doing, and all that 'super duper' sensitivity adds to the 'go button' just not necessarily in the best way No doubt he is a fun little horse,., he just gets turned on, and is hard to settle him down after that. Work in progress!

Glad to hear you an Zippy are making progress! Sounds like you guys will make a great team. Sensitive horses can be both challenging and rewarding. I was riding a mare for a while that I likened to walking in a mine field. Sometimes we made it to the other side just fine, some times we had a blow up and had to work through it. (This mare had a long history of abuse to contend with as well as being sensitive) Keep up the good work! I'm sure you two will get there

LOL, my BIGGEST problem with Zippy is,., he isn't Red Its like driving a new car, after having driven the same car for 20 years. All the 'kinks' were worked out with Red,., now I'm starting from scratch again

Me too. Been there. The two horses I owned between Apollo's injury and buying Benny were both very nice, but I never quite clicked with either of them. When I was looking at horses before I bought Benny, I more or less refused to even consider something I didn't instantly click with like I did with Apollo. I eventually was told (ironically on a thread on the other place) that I was never going to find another 'Apollo' and probably didn't want too. That kind of set things back into perspective for me, and I was able to open myself to Benny. It will all work itself out in the end. We are cheering you on!

I have the skills, just lost some confidence along the way,., But working with a trainer/coach is REALLY helping our relationship. I think I have a trail ride scheduled for Sunday,.., Zippy NEEDS a trail ride and so do I

She isn't the horse I had as a kid, but I am not the same either.
Zippy isn't Red, but you aren't the same person you were, with young Red, either. You are doing such a wonderful job with Zip. I don't think I could ride a horse with a lot of go. I would be to afraid.

Isis doesnt care about stirrups banging when being lunged, I have balanced them on the saddle before and lunged him till they fell down, then he freaks for a few strides, this is something I'll work on when I have an arena, it's really not safe for me at the moment!
Glad things are getting better with him, takes time, doesn't help when you lose your confidence a little, I ride dax to get mine back, even at his worst he is nothing compared to the rest!
