My sweet husband bought me a new computer the other day. It has Windows 8.0 on it. The guy at the shop said it could be upgraded to 8.1 easily but it actually costs $140 which he never mentioned. There's no office program on it and I can't get my documents and my old emails didn't download and I need some things off of there. I also don't like the 8.0. I guess I'll get used to it but it's awkward. Prompts are hidden and you have to hover to get to them. Plus you have to go into settings to shut it down or put it to sleep. Changes to programs should be improvements, not just change for the sake of change.
Am I just being a carmudgeon that hates change or does anyone else have 8.0 and likes it? Any suggestions for how to navigate or tips and tricks?

Hmmm, I don't have any experience with Windows 8. The computer at work I use runs Windows 7 and I know we can't upgrade because of some compatability issues with Windows 8 but I don't know any specifics.
It has taken me almost 6 months to get used to using Windows. I am a Mac person, through and through, but work computer is a PC. I still prefer my Mac but am slowly learning the shortcuts and things of that nature.
I don't think you are being a curmudgeon at all - I hate change too - any and all kinds of change!

I have Windows 7 at home and at work. I love it. We bought hubby a new computer and it has Windows 8. It's AWFUL!!! I'm the one that always sets up his new computers for him (he's not very tech savvy), and I was pulling my hair out, frustrated beyond belief, and finally just gave up! I told him I was sorry, but this time around he was going to have to figure it out for himself. I don't think it's a very user friendly operating system at all. (jmo)

I'm not tech savvy at all but my daughter's pretty good. She can't figure out how to retrieve some things that should have transferred to it and she's getting frustrated with how it works.

Is there a help hotline number you can call? Of course if they have out-sourced their help lines, you may not get much help.

My mom has it, she HATES IT!!! hl has it I know as she has stated her displeasure to me several times while she got used to it.. She might be able to help you maneuver around and answer some questions, offer tips to help get you started... hl has obviously gotten used to the program and working with it. I have Windows 7 Professional and the one that is a step up from home...what came on the computers... I like it and don't want to change again. It's comfortable like a pair of old shoes.

I like the windows 8 and when it asks me to change to windows 8.1 it does not allow me to do it. and i am not going to pay 140 to do that.
as for bringing items from the old computor to the new one you link them both together to transfer items. OR do as i did . use a usb and hope it all works from one to the other. i also uploaded some of my forms and documents independently so i would not loose anything.
internet explorer or chrome server is the best and i use last pass to save all my personal sites and their log in information. so all i had to do was search for last pass on the new comptor and all my personal things were there to use. windows 8 is great. just takes time to play with the cubes on the home page and yes have to go to setting to shut down.
