I have had horses founder but from fever and it was not a life threatening situation. a horse that is here as a boarder has sore front feet. vets say there is an abcess on the right hoof. my farrier dug out an abcess on the left, when he walks it seems like his lower leg has pins and needles and the horse can not figure out how to move his leg. what on earth can it be. the owner is willing to spend the money for the vet but i would like to try and diagnose the problem sometimes he goes back like a sit, than lurches forward on tender feet. tomorrow he gets his boots on just to see if he has any relief. he is such a good boy and he does not deserve the pain. He was a high performance show horse that was always in the ribbons, and now at 14 is DONE.

Hmmm Vet said he had an abcess in the right but farrier dug it out of the left? Is there any heat in his legs or feet. Was he walking funny before he dug out the abcess? Weird...

Some horses (Red) can have multiple abscesses, in more than one hoof. Been there, done that Also, can have varying degrees of pain, and difficulty walking. Are feet warm to the touch, can you feel a racing pulse, both are symptoms/signs of laminitis, as well, the classic founder stance. Maybe it could be laminitis hmmm

No Heat and ;pulse is normal. it does get elevated when he is trying to walk. and he has to think when he is turning. you can actually see him trying to decide which leg goes first and which is to follow. i am going to do my darndest to do what i can. i am going to talk to a horse communicator this week . i know sounds crazy but worth the try.

Have any mud you can put him in to draw the heat? You know...the mud hole by the water trough sort of mud, not poultice.... Did he by chance get into wood chips or shavings he should not of? Almost sounds like he as a coffin bone issue or rotation happening from something.... I know the " something is the issue!!"
poor boy....

I am leaning towards rotation also. so his boots will have to be put on and i need some soft rubbery material to put on the inside.
banamine works wonders. he is pain free for hours with it and no i do not give in the muscle. i put it on his gums .

Hubby seems to feel that he has cronic abcesses so we are going to give him antibotics for 10 days and soak his feet and treat for thrush (he does have soft soles and funky smell.) I wish i could put him outside in the field but he will not walk that far. so now a new regime. and hopefully something will work.

he has been on antibiotics for 7 days and i am keeping his comfortable in a soft stall and for his walks outside so he can eat grass you are going to think i am nuts but i spoke to a communicator today about him and she said "he wants his front boots on" i do have them in the tack room still in the box. hmm what did she mean "he wants" ? his boots also she seems to feel him telling her is front feet hurt from the ankle down. that is why he is in pain. she spoke to me and told me to get his fronts xrayed and determine the amount of rotation and what can be done. that this stems from an infection that he said he had , and yes he did have a huge pus infection on his rump and down his hock. what he told her is that his backside got all big and it hurt . I will continue to give him painkillers and hope for the best. it is a shame 14 years old and in the prime of his life and i am praying that he can at least get pasture sound.

I thought so also but the symptoms are not the same. and i mentioned that to the owner and she said the vets told her it was not. but i suppose a horse can get it at any time. he seemed a little better today. actually walked around the indoor arena with a spring in his step. perhaps the antibiotics is kicking in. and he is feeling better.

I had a conversation with the owner on fb and she is insisting on front shoes with pads. with winter coming on that is the last thing i need on a horse . slipping and sliding and perhaps needing borium. i give up.

The owner came up the other day and i had the horse inside because of the rain. she paid board for december and was all smilie and happy, friday night i get a message via fb that she is coming to pick him up on sunday to to give him bute on saturday night for the trip. what is she talking about. according to the message she e-mailed me. well i never got any e-mail
I called her up to talk to her direct and she says that everytime she comes up the horse is inside. well yes. every time she comes up the horse is having pain issues and i keep him on soft ground to keep him from being. in pain. and i have not put shoes on him ,. she mentioned it two weeks ago. and since she left happy and never mentioned the feet or shoes i did not approach the subject either. but i did have a call into the farrier for him to come and also for a price. so she says "the ship has set sail" so i just shut my mouth and said i will have the horse ready on sunday.
he is in pain and i asked her if he ever had xrays and she told me no. he will have his shoes and still be in pain from no diagnosis,. poor horse,.

Yah no kidding poor horse. x-rays would have been my first thought. Then trims/shoes to help? My friend/acquaintance just lost her horse this week to laminitis. So sad..

She has updated me on the horses progress and he has shoes. and the vet was there. and she never mentioned xrays AGAIN, so i suppose they just slapped the shoes on. of course it will help to curtail pain but the problem is still there. at least the horse is in their care now and i am relieved of the nursing duties and the worry that i could not help him. besides he was supposed to be retired and that is what i base my board on. not medical layover which is more per month
