One of my favorite subjects sun So here's a brag! I sprayed bug spray on Peaches without a halter yesterday. Simply told her to whoa and she did. She didn't want to at first, of course, she's just that kind of guy, gotta resist everything but a treat, but then she was fine. Gerald was grooming her last week and he used a halter. She got rather pissy with him so he had to give her a lesson in manners. She wasn't pleased to say the least but she did calm down. So this weekend Gerald said, "Peaches doesn't like me". I don't think she doesn't like you, I said, its that she doesn't like being made to do anything and you are more forceful than I am. I ask, you tell. I break the ask down more and out patience her until all that's left is for her to comply so I quit asking. Besides she knows I love her and you don't give her and kisses. She likes 'em... usually. She's wrapped her head around me when I've hugged her and she's leaned her head on mine when I was just standing next to her "being". Those were no accidents, she did 'em on purpose. Sure I've made her move her little patootie like no ones business when she really needs to get the message that I am seriously expecting her to do as I ask and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt she knows what I am asking. And I really made her earn her keep when she kicked me, there was no gentle lope in a circle, there was a definite gaited canter in a very particular figure eight! I mean it had to be perfect! Took a while but she stopped resisting and as soon as I saw her relax into the work and decide for herself, I let her rest and "think about it". That was a big lesson for me. It kinda came to me all at once. There are times to reward the try and then there are times when they need to do a task exactly and precisely. This is how I know that she really can become a good ride, a trusty mount. Don't know if it'll be in my lifetime or I can become that rider, but I do believe its possible.

I like your philosophy Zippy can have 'tude' about things,., but he has come a long way with his trust issues. Looking forward to hearing how Peaches makes out with the trainer. You've inspired me to start following thru with some calls to local trainers too

We're so concerned with the horse trusting us, but will I ever be able to trust myself and trust Peaches?! I often wonder if its that I need a trainer for my horses or a psychiatrist for me?!

Well if Peaches didn't trust you. You wouldn't have gotten as far as you have. Keep them big girl panties on and remember who the boss mare is. Some horses if you give them an inch they will try and take a yard. You just have to be one step ahead of them. You will survive this!!! I guess I'm very lucky to have the horses I have. All I have to do is say HEY and they are like yes maam. I trust both of them with my life. They both have carried me over some rough terrain and took very good care of me. Yes I do spoil them too. But they also know that when it comes to business it's all business. I can tell you what they are going to do before they do it.

In 2010 Peaches had a melt down and bucked harder than I've ever seen in any rodeo. Now i know why she went ape poopy and if I had been riding it wouldn't of happened because like i said I don't do "big stuff" all at once, sure the heck not after that! And while I know conceptually what to do to train Peaches to listen to me instead of lose her mind, I'm not there day after day to develop that. Training a horse isn't just for the horse, its for developing that relationship between horse and rider, the communication, the trust. I don't haz dat cheezeburger. That's why this working one place and horses in another IS SO FRUSTRATING! Hence, the send her and the others to someone who will ride them and train them 5 days/wk for 30 days. Just in and of itself is a huge thing for them and hopefully for me too.

Good for you for doing what you are doing with Peaches. it takes time . more so with some horses than with others, and i think mares are the ones that are more leery about letting their guard down. so keep up the work with her and slowly she comes around and proves to you that she can be trusted. oh and while on the subject. make sure you tell the trainer of her trust issues before she goes to the trainers. you do not want them to undo what you have done.

If they do try to do too much without trust, I'd like to be there to see it, its spectacular Hey, I have to try not to say too much, I get so utterly chatty its embarrassing.

I'm giving you kudos. You're doing what you can to make the situation better for both you and her. Good for you.
My daughter is going to have someone ride her horse soon because he's a bit of a jerk and hasn't been ridden all winter and is being very disrespectful. He's also grown into a big boy. He's tall but he used to look appendix, now he looks like a big roping horse. She's a very good, confident rider so for her to want someone else to ride him is surprising.

Being confident means not being foolhardy, she has her momma's smarts I didn't do as much horse stuff as I wanted to do this weekend. All the stress just put my out. Did a fair bit of gardening but I was just worn to a frazzle. But I did go out to bug spray everyone. And just to see if I could, out in the middle of the pasture, no halter or anything I asked Peaches to pickup her right back foot. The same foot that introduced itself to my left leg She lifted it but with a large amount of resistance. What a putz. Then just to make a fine point on it I asked for her front right and that one was much easier. In fact, I was happily surprised that she kept it up as long as I wanted her to. So I quit while I was ahead. Then I forgot to see how each of them would react if we played some "trailer games". Gerald did that mid-week and as expected Ziggy was just fine, Penny put her head in but that was all and Peaches didn't want to have anything to do with it. The trouble is, its a stock trailer and so its a pretty big step up, but its what we have and they're just gonna have to deal with it. I hope Gerald doesn't get all cowboy. I reminded him a couple times that they have to be able to unload too. And that the trainer is expecting them to lead out, not simply bail. Cross your fingers.

Looking forward to hearing about their progress and yours as well. Do you think Peaches might be persuded to get in the trailer if Ziggy was already in it?

I have the money for three horses for 30 days. We'll see where things are at after that. Hopefully at the end of that time I'll be living and working somewhere I can make plans for following up. I think Penny will be a world and a half better. I'd really like to find a fellow HA person to free lease Ziggy. Someone who wants a horse who is well trained and trailers well, excellent for the farrier BUT for me, who likes to have a horse who'd rather stand still than move and Ziggy isn't like that. I need a horse that moves slow enough for me to figure out what to do next. But she's the best one of the three so I'm not trying to "get rid of her". I just can't ride three horses and Gerald may never ride again. I want to see her happy.

Sometimes it is best for horses to let them go, so that someone could give them what they need, if we are not able enough. I hope you will ride soon and enjoy every minute of it.

Try a flag on a stick, worked for Ira, you just get someone to stand behind him and hit the ground behind her to she gets annoyed and takes a step, you can intensify how hard and fast to do it depending on how stubborn she's being, there was no talking or shouting when the lady who picked Ira up was loading him, it was all relaxed and apart from a couple freak outs the flag worked:)

its weird, i have a guy friend that just the way he carries himself makes even the most nervous horses calm. hard to catch horses, (not mine, but i have seen it) walk right up to him, even with a halter in his hand. hard loaders load right up, he also uses a stick with a flag, and never touches the horse with it. he is fun to watch, but doesnt understand our amazement, his whole demeanor is calm, an quiet, i am secretly in love with him ... oops, shhhhh, did i just say that

Ziggy is at the trainers now. As expected she just loaded right up and came out just as nice. Gerald is happy with the folks there after chatting with them a bit. One of the trainers made a comment about looking for a teenaged horse but Gerald said that he's too attached to Ziggy and all of our animals, to sell any of them. Isn't that sweet? I didn't expect it, but I am relieved. Still and all, we'll see how they do with the Zig before we bring any of the others over there.

Hooray for Ziggy! I can't wait to hear how she does with the trainer.
How sweet of Gerald to say he's too attached to let any of them go.
