The place where we board our horses is a lovely place. They run a large equipment and landscaping business so it's beautiful and they keep it meticulous. They don't know a lot about horses, though, even though they've always had them so sometimes their ideas aren't what I'd like. For example, they have a cattle style hay feeder and the horses have all rubbed half their manes out on the pieces across the top. Their latest idea is to have texas gates for the entrances to the field where the horses will be going. They've already put them in and they're only about three feet across. Texas gates scare the crap out of me. I saw a picture once of a horse that had got it's leg down into one and had then fallen over. It was still alive and the leg had snapped right off. Our horses aren't familiar with texas gates and I know my horse could jump across that easily. Am I right to be concerned? The whole place is gated so even if they got out they'd be confined but they're located right beside a major highway. I'm mostly concerned about the horses not respecting the texas gate or trying to walk over it.

I had to look up what you meant by Texas gate. We call them cattle guards around here. And yes, horses don't respect them like cattle do and can easily get hurt trying to cross over.
I would talk with the property owners about your concerns. Are there other fields without the gates your horse(s) could be turned out in? If so, I would be adamant that they only go in those fields without the gates. You have enough other stuff to worry about, this shouldn't be another.

Sorry, yes! Cattle guards. They're giving us a great price on board which really helps a lot right now but it won't be worth it if anything happens to the horses. Thanks for your reply MM!

Cattle guards and horses don't mix at all. wag finger I would talk to the owners. I have seen first hand what happens when a horse tries to cross one. Needless to say it wasn't pretty. Reason they are called CATTLE guards...

I would not be comfortable with that at all!! I agree, you need to talk to the BO about this. It could become a huge problem for somebody's horse(s).

Scary! I wouldn't want them where I had horses either. I would explain my fears to the BO, and hope they understand the dangers. Good luck, keep us posted

Thanks for the input everyone! I'm trying to reduce stress right now, not have more. But I didn't know if I was being silly by worrying.
