My friend has and cattle. One of their cows had triplets last weekend. They're all healthy and are doing well. She doesn't even have to bottle feed them. They're all the same size and are perfect except for being smaller than the other calves. Any idea how rare this is?

It's supposed to say t r i p l e t s. The car going on a trip makes it a little confusing.

I know nothing about cows, but I've never heard of a cow having t r i p l e t s! That must have been quite a load for their mother to carry! So glad to hear they are all healthy and doing well.

Darn it you guys, I'm not good at the picture stuff. She posted a picture on Facebook. I'll try to figure out how I can get it on here. The mom and babies are black. The babies are shiny and cute!

Lipizzan no, not artificially inseminated. It's been just over a week and they're still doing well. She told me an interesting thing. If a cow has twins- or triplets- and they're of different sexes the females are less likely to be able to have their own calves later because they end up with higher testosterone. This group of three includes a boy and two girls so they'll fall into this category.

I just looked it up. It happens about one time in just over 100,000 births. So, rare but not that rare. Less common in beef cows as opposed to dairy cows.

Wow, if the females are probably sterile, I guess that seals their fate. And they are cute!
