I agree with HL4L - he will adjust, it will just take some time and some help.

Hubby put blue out yesterday with the herd. and we saw him in the upper field and he went with the horses to the far 30 acres. at 3pm hubby says we should go get him and bring him in. what a time from beginning to end. we could not find him. finally i said he must be in the opening to the woods that are leading to the horse trails. YUP there he was 30 feet from the pasture. so hubby gets him and walks him up into the field. takes his fly mask off and the lead , now mind you, there are no other horses around and the area we were at all this horse could see is a huge hill going up and no barn. so he turned around and went back into the woods. and us on foot. , lost. no blue, we searched for 2 hours. finally we had to put the other horses away and it is now dark . i prayed i would see him this morning. Sure enough, he is out there with the other horses but not that close. It seems the other horses are not allowing him to come close. Is ti because he was not with them for 12 days and they think he is new? or do they see his face different? tonight he is in a field that at least he could see the farm. I am told he will need to adjust, and I do hope he will.

Could he still "smell" different? You know...antiseptic or medicinal from the surgery? I know my horse when I was a kid didn't like the "smell" of my vet when he had on his coveralls because they smelled...well, think of how a dentist office is and at least I wrinkle my nose up to that "medicinally" smell.... Can horses do the same I wonder? hmmm Poor Blue...he needs some extra TLC from his human...that be you horselady!!

We found Blue in the woods this morning. thankfully i used to go hunting with my father and looked for signs in the leaves and branches and used my intuition, he was about 100 yards from me, thankfully the woods had no undergrowth except a few bushes. I called hubby on his cell and we got him with a bucket of food. now to walk him to the barn. about 1/2 mile away. but we did it with the golf card and foot power. the horse that wanted to charge at blue i chased away with the golf cart. and now blue is safe in the barn. HL4L this gelding is for sale come get him.,

You've got your hands full horselady. I had a dog that went totally blind, and it took a while but he adjusted and so did I. It does break your heart though. At least Blue has the one good eye. I wonder if they have depth perception problems with one eye like humans do...
Best wishes kisses

The need to see on both sides. the way the eye is made they can see behind them and in front for distance and not real up close under their nose. so for him to have one eye missing he needs to tilt his head , i am assuming that is why the main herd gelding does not want the horse near the herd. he thinks the tilt is a threat. like two horses in the wild wanting to defend their herd. they tilt and look at each other. we will have to make arrangements to have him kept in a field with one other horse during the rest of the year until spring when he and this friend can be moved to a 5 acre pasture. for now he will be safe.

Poor guy. I'm sure this is going to be quite an adjustment for him. At least now he is in a field where he will be safe and not keep getting lost. I hope he is able to adjust to his new vision soon. It sounds like this has been as hard on you and your hubby as it has been on poor Blue.

Glad Blue is in a safer pasture with just one friend. Hopefully they will bond and this friend can help Blue move about the farm. Sending lots of and prayers your way.

The vet was out to take the stitches off of the eye area. and she said it looks real good. no infection and he will loose the eye lit movement with time. and for now he is in a huge round pen with a shelter, alone. until we can get a buddy in there for the winder. so he is safe.

He is such a wiley coyote, i had him with two ponies and when he saw the rest of the herd go to the far 30 acres i could see him listening for the electric fence. some of the paddock is hot and some of it is not. wellllllll in a blink he was thru the electro braid and up the hill. and gone. into the field and woods. this am i got him again and he came trotting up to me in the field and stopped right in front of me. i put the lead on him and brought him in, this week the horses are going to be given their hay and the gate will be closed to the pasture as the beginning of hunting season and i do not want anyone shot. so he will stay with the ponies ( i hope ) just in case he is getting a red blanket
his eye. or area looks great.
