I think also it is a great idea. I feel really sorry for those animals that are left behinde when such things happen. Thank God we don't have tornados.

Wow, what a great idea! My horses' safety is always a big fear of mine anytime we are under a tornado warning. My husband, my dog, my 2 indoor cats and I can (and do) go to the basement to ride out the bad storms, but I hate that I have no way to protect my horses and my barn cats.

Yeah, we rarely have tornadoes here but it is hard during a hurricane to know the outside animals are exposed to the weather.

That is a good idea for 10 horses or perhaps a few more. and as a suggestion. if i were to build something like that i would use a partition like there is in a horse trailer between each horse. that way even over night there is no risk of someone kicking their neighbor and than it domino down the line. and why not have gallons of water handy. just fill the jars and place in a corner for the over night or next day watering.
as for the north east. thankfully there is no need for something that strong. my barns are strong enough and i made sure there are no trees near the buildings to come crashing down.

What a great idea! We get the odd tornado watch but so far we've been ok, most of the tornados stay south of us I think. We did have one tornado warning for just south of us last year so I did pack up the cats in carriers and put them and the chinchilla in the basement, but luckily the tornado kept away. But I also worry about what would happen to the horses at the barn. I wish they had included the cost in the article to see how feasible this would be for the average horse owner.

Just design it and figure out the square footage and what materials are going to be used and take it to a big box store and let them figure out the cost. of course you need to add labor and perhaps what you are going to use on the inside for the partitions for the horses. i would rough estimate about a building with concrete blocks and a sturdy roof to be in the area of $10,000 plus. for 10 horses (maybe) not a bad investment for horses saftey and other livestock.
