I have never really had one. My dad was a great one. But I only did the picking part.. So we are waiting for our taxes to come back. Then we are going to get a tiller for the tractor. We are going to have a pretty good size lot for one. So Tony has done gardens before so that may help. Our apple tree is loaded with buds and the peach is doing good. Lost one peach tree. Also lost a few crepe myrtles I planted last fall.. I found out what killed them, The cat using them as a scratching post. next ones will have cages around them...And I'll be watching one orange cat.

That is great idea. We have also garden, and we have tomatoes, potatoes, onions, carrots, beans, pumpkins and lots of other stuff. We don't like to buy vegetables from store. Also have our apples, pears... But it does need a lot of time and care.

I love a garden. We are in a wooded area though, and now the trees have encroached so much that we don't get enough sun. The last few years I've done container gardening on the deck. I still get vegetables and herbs but the plants are definitely not as healthy as in the ground.
Last year we belonged to a CSA (buying a share of a farmers crop) and had fresh veggies all season.
Good luck with yours!

Val, i planted tomatoes in containers with horse manure and soil. so if you need some bring truck, lol i raid my sons garden every year as his is fenced in and he does not have horses tramping on everything. my grand father had an amazing garden, everything was straight and boxed off in even rows. and the strawberry patch was huge and we would get fruit the size of limes. with so many farmers markets around me and people selling their veggies in their yard, there really is no need for me to plant. smileys-flowers-159175

HL, believe it or not I remember your grandfather's garden, now you know I was little when he was around. But I do remember being impressed by it, that I was just standing there looking at how neat it was and everything was in rows.
Those were the days

That is how i remember. it also. and he had the best produce ever. huge tomatoes, pumpkins, beans. squash, even asparagus. no one grows that in their yard. and the summer kitchen was always in the process of canning something and the cold cellar always packed with jars, yes those were the days. smileys-home-243828

Well got my new Mantis tiller today. smileys-flowers-159175To use once we get the plot done. CJ is going to get his plow hooked up and then Tony will plow the plot then go and change to the disk and get it disked good. Then pick out rocks..And then we can use the neighbors tiller to finish it off. Then we can go get some plants and see how we do..This will be an adventure... But I love the Mantis. The new ones are quiet and have honda engines. They are a handy little bad azz tiller for it's size.. Now I can get the flower beds done right...

I planted a raised veggie garden this year. Everything is currently still alive...we'll see for how long! I've got potatoes, beans, cucumbers, bell peppers, peas and tomatoes. Also planted some jalapenos in containers for my son - he loves them!

Min, map everything out on paper first and get rope or carpenters string and get ready to square off the area and than cut into portions for each veggie. do not plant the beans in one long row. do it in either 2 or 3 rows that are shorter so the plants cross polinate and they are easier to pick. I also plant different size tomatoes. one for salad and others for canning. like plum and big boy. oh and leave enough room to go between to weed. have fun and wish i could help. smileys-flowers-427124

Well CJ will get the plow tomorrow so we can get busy after that. We already have it squared off. We are going to do short rows. It will be a long skinny garden.. I'll get pics once it's plowed. I did work on a flower bed at the back porch. Pulled up the rock outline and took my new Mantis and went to town on it. Got about half of it done. Then I had to quit for awhile. So I hope to finish that off tomorrow. I'm making it wider. Now I need to figure out what to plant in it. It gets morning sun. Has to be perenneials Plus I want to replace the lattice and I have a small tree I have to pull out first.. Busy Busy Lint and Tony went out and cut more cedar trees down to use for post. Got the road front done. Cutting off post tops tomorrow and them we will put the fencing wire we took down from other areas. After that we're going with high tensile all the way around. We'll get there someday!! But your dealing with old broke up people doing it all...so we work hard one day and take it easy the next... smileys-flowers-548267

I love having a vegetable garden but we haven't had one in 8 or 9 years, since the acreage that had a big one already set up. I love seeing things poke through the ground and growing into lush plants. We had a big strawberry patch there, too. But the robins would get the strawberries. They'd just take a slice out with their beak and leave the rest. So we put chicken wire over the patch and then a robin got under it and died and we felt bad so we took it off. Oh, I miss that place.

I want to plant strawberries also. But I'm going to get one of those 3 tier strawberry gardens. It comes with a frame netting and sprinkler system. I will get that first and get it plant ready them order my strawberries. I'm going with the ever bearing type. We disk up the garden but need to do it more. New ground to deal with. The garden was Tony and Jess's idea more than mine. But I'll help... The weather is now coming back to warm. Suppose to be 80 Sunday. I think I'm going to JR tomorrow. Ashley wants to ride. So we will go out for a little while, and Sunday we have a cook out for the May birthdays. So a lazy weekend....

My grandfather had strawberry patch that was 5 feet wide and 10 feet long and the amazing fruit it got. we never went with berries and made so many jars of jam , the roots and vines spread , that would be easiest and least time consuming to take care of.
my containers are ready for the tomatoes plants. i plant outside on the first full moon after mothers day. or perhaps this year it will be later in new york because of the cold.

We tried tomatoes for the first time last year. We planted them in pots and babied them all summer and then one day when nobody was home it hailed and they were ruined. I can't be bothered this year. I'll just go to the farmer's market and buy veggies from the Hutterites.
