When our cats pass away, we have these paw prints made. (By Peartree Impressions) Fur clippings are sent and they match the paint to the fur, and then attach the fur in a little baggie to the back of the frame, so we have the paw print and fur clippings altogether. We also have their urns on shelves with pendants we had made around each one: Well, I was thinking, for Cricket and Maddy, the mares I've lost, of getting this photo frame. They are made for grads and the skinny section is to put their grad cap tassel in, but I was thinking of tail hair: The problem is, when Cricket died 15 years ago, I didn't think to keep any tail hair, because 1) I was in complete shock when she died, and 2) I didn't know people made horsehair bracelets. I have quite a lot of Maddy's tail hair, so not worried about her. But I'm not sure what to do with Cricket. At one point she had pulled some tail hair out by getting it stuck in a cracked board and I had made myself a bracelet, but there wasn't a lot of hair in it - not enough to make a fancy braid. I did have enough to have a ring made, but now have very little left over. So I don't know if I should just put the 20 or so 4 inch strands in the frame, get a thick ribbon and attach the hairs to that so there's more to look at, borrow some hairs from Lucy to add thickness, but then it's not really Cricket, or ??? Any ideas? Here's the rings I had made. Cricket is the black hair, and Maddy is the white. But I wanted something that involved their pictures as well: And because I like My Little Ponies, I had these made for me! From left to right, Cricket, Maddy & Lucy!

I love the idea of using the graduation frame to make a memorial for the horses you've lost. As far as only having a little bit of tail hair from Cricket to put in the display, I like your idea of attaching the hairs you do have to a thick ribbon and putting it in there. Like you, when I lost my mare, Roxy, I was so devastated that I never thought about saving any tail hair. I kick myself for it every day now. I have 1 single strand of her tail hair that I found stuck in a board in her stall after we had her buried, so I carefully retrieved it, and I tied it to the hook that I keep her halter and lead on. Besides my memories and pictures, it's all I have left of my sweet girl.

Shadowlark I love the memorials. Maybe you could make a beige macrame strand to put in the frame, and weave in the 20 strands together so it shows like a stripe in the macrame? That would give your sample a little bulk. Here is a picture of what I mean, but not in all the multicolors, it should be beige so the dark horsehairs show. There are better examples I'm sure, but I just didn't search too far. Just an idea.

Hmm, it won't show my picture.
But if you do a search on macrame, they have some pretty, simple patterns that you can choose from to add the horsehair to.

Wow I love that.... All of it. I have tail hairs from my boy who is gone for over a two years now. But here we don't have stuff like that to do anything with it.

Lipizzan - I got the rings made by this girl in England. She ships worldwide, you just need to contact her for shipping prices. Her stuff is kinda pricey, but it was the only place I could find that did the rings. Tail End JewelleryI had a bracelet made by this girl in the US and her prices are better. I'm sure she would ship to you as well! Uniquely EquineValhallanite - I googled macrame and saw some neat ideas. Will have to look into it and see if I can make it work. Thanks for the suggestion!

You're welcome! For the record, this is all I have to work with. The majority of the hairs are about 4 inches long and the few longer ones are about 6 inches. Maybe about 30 hairs altogether. And they are really dry and brittle. And crinkled from being in a tight braid for 10+ years. Gonna be hard to make something that looks nice

Maybe I should just get a glass vial and put the hair in? Like this one, but a longer (say 3 inches) vial: Glass Vial With Horse Hair

It looks like enough to me. I'd try soaking them in conditioner and see if they smooth out and plump up and I'd trim the longer ones a bit. If you really think it's not enough what about getting a friend with a horse with a black mane and tail to donate some hairs to fill it out a bit. It would still mostly be your horse's hair and nobody else would need to know.
