My poor girl is back at the vet's again. Seems she's having another pancreatitis flare up. So she's hooked up on IVs and will be there for at least the next 3 days. Hoping she'll be home before the long weekend, but if not home for Friday I'm sure we'll be able to get her Saturday and have her home for Easter. Poor thing, she seems to have flare ups about every 3-4 months, but cause is not known :( Please send positive vibes her way!

Sending well wishes that she comes home for the easter weekend. Is there something in her diet that might be causing this.?

They (vets in general, not just mine) don't really know what causes pancreatitis. It's recommended that cats with it be on a low fat, novel-protein diet, which she is, she just has these flare ups every so often. Our vet is fantastic and charges us bare minimum (like 70% off) when she has to stay, so that helps, but I just worry about her. Unfortunately, when she has flare ups, she needs to be on IV, giving fluids at home isn't enough. She's on the special diet (Hill z/D), gets pepcid when she has bad stomach acid, and gets digestive enzymes with each meal. That's pretty much all we can do at home, other then pain killers, but by the time she's showing she's in pain, it's too far gone and that's when she goes in to the vet. She also gets biweekly steroid shots for her arthritis, which is supposed to in theory also help the inflammation in her pancreas. I just miss her when she's not here. She's so funny. She has the loudest purr and she loves to cuddle when she's feeling well. That's one of the first signs she's not well - when she stops cuddling at night

We went to visit her when hubby was done work and she looks much better already. More alert and could not wait for me to get the kennel door open so she could bury her head in my arms and start purring. She'll have to stay a few more days, but should be able to come home by Thursday, fingers crossed!

Just got back from visiting her. They got the results of the specFPl which "blood test that detects the level of pancreatic lipase in the blood and provides information about the health of your patient’s pancreas." (From IDEXX Lab). Anyway, the higher the number, the worse the pancreas is. Normal range is 0 - 3.5. Anything over 5.5 is considered to be pancreatitis. Her level when they drew blood yesterday was 50!! No wonder she wasn't feeling well! Our vet was actually amazed that it was so high but that she isn't having any other complications that can go with the disease (like fatty liver disease, IBD, etc). She is eating well and way more alert but he doesn't want to send her home to soon in case she relapses. So, she is staying until end of day Thursday. They will draw more blood then and send for another specFPl test, and should have the results Saturday. If her number is still really high, we'll take her back after Easter to put her back on IV for a few more days. Tomorrow when I go visit, I'm going to try to get a video of her when I first go in the back. She's always so pouty but just springs to life when I call her name. It's pretty darn cute! Here's a pic. That blue thing is her favorite toy - basically a strip of fabric with some cat nip in the middle tied in a knot. She loves it!

Poor Winky, I love her little black nose! She must be a very patient cat to tolerate all of this. I will pray that her numbers come down.

She is much better today! And she's home! She had more blood drawn to send for testing, so hopefully her numbers are down. We will monitor her over the weekend and see what the blood results say. But I'm so happy she's home!
Here's a video from when I went to pick her up - she perks right up when I call her name!

She's cute eh? I wish I'd filmed a bit longer - right after I hit stop she started reaching through the door to try to get to me, then started smooshing her face up against the door. She's such a character! She's definitely feeling better as she is sitting beside me right now, meowing at me for her dinner!

Well, we got the test results yesterday and the number was down to 27, so a good start but nowhere near where we want it. She ate well over the weekend and was acting normally, so when talking to the vet yesterday we said we'd see how she did before bringing her back in. Well, that phone call was at 5:30PM, fed them at 7PM and she barely ate. Left her in the room for 2 hours (she usually finishes her dinner in less than 10 minutes) and she barely touched it. Same thing this morning and what she did eat, she threw up. So she's back at the vet's again. Hopefully another 4 or 5 days and he numbers will be back closer to normal range. We may also start giving sub-q fluids at home to see if that helps keep the numbers down.
