I only have 2 horses, and I don't have the equipment to move round bales, so I feed flakes from small square hay bales to my horses. I normally just put the flakes out on the ground, but the trouble is, especially this time of year, when I put the hay on the ground the horses trample some of it into the mud, and some of it gets blown away by the strong spring winds, so a lot of the hay just gets wasted. Since hay is too expensive to be letting so much of it go to waste, hubby and I have been trying to come up with alternative ways to feed hay outside this time of year without it costing a fortune. Unfortunately we hadn't been having any luck until we went to Road to the Horse. We were checking out all the vendors booths and happened to run across one that was selling the Health EZ Hay Feeder. It is a hanging slow hay feeder that holds roughly 2 flakes. It's supposed to be fairly indestructible (which is important to us since Zena will try to destroy it ), and since it hangs, it also doubles as a toy (which is also good for us, since Zena gets bored easily and will want to play with it to amuse herself ). The best part was that these slow feeders were not very expensive, so we bought 2 to try out. So far so good! We've been using them for a little more than a week now and neither of them have gotten broken, it slows the girls down so their hay lasts longer, they are easy to load and, since they are hanging feeders, my hubby hung them under the lean so they stay covered. I love not having to walk out into the mud to feed hay, and I love that my girls are not having to eat their hay out of the mud. There has also been very little waste. What little hay falls out while they are eating just lands on the ground under the feeder and they are able to eat it too. I would definitely recommend this product!
Here is a picture of my girls eating from their EZ Hay Feeders for the first time. (Please excuse how muddy they are - it's mud season, so as fast as I get it off, they just put it right back on )
They have figured out that if they use team work they can get the hay out a little faster, but they are still eating it slower than they did when it was just on the ground.
