The State Stud Farm in Đakovo was founded in 1506, which makes it one of the oldest horse farms in Europe. It also represents the long tradition of horse breeding in this area. At the beginning of the 18.Ct. Lipizzan horses began to be bred at the Stud Farm in Đakovo. Nowadays the State Stud Farm in Đakovo uses two locations for breeding and selection – The Stud farm in the centre of Đakovo and Ivandvor- a property near Đakovo. Besides breeding and selection of horses the State Stud Farm also does the trainingand dressage, the quality of which is confirmed by many high ranked places won in horse competitions.
The Đakovo Lipizzans have spread the word about Đakovo and its area at many appearances in the world. One of many important people who recognized the value of Lipizzans is Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen was thrilled by the appearance of Đakovo Lipizzans at the opening of the Olympic Games, and being an expert in these noble animals, she visited the Stud Farm and Đakovo in 1972. She rode through the town in a famous Đakovo Lipizzans four-horse team.
The State Stud Farm in Đakovo became unavoidable center of many tourist visits to Đakovo, Slavonija and Croatia. Among its basic activities the Stud Farm also does many activities for public and for many admirers of horses and horse sports.
Three basic activities of The State Stud Farm in Đakovo:
1. Breeding and selection of Lipizzans
2. Work and dressage of stallions for sports competitions which includes:
- hurdles
- two-horse team ride
- four-horse team ride
3. Food production on one's own land, i.e. on 303 ha land areas:
- Hay (350t)
- Straw (300t)
- Oat (400t)
The year 1506. Is quoted as a foundation year of the Stud Farm in Đakovo. The word „stud farm“ is first metioned in a written document at that time.
It is connected to Mijo Kesarić, the Bishop of Đakovo, who owned the stud farm of 90 Arabic horses. Nevertheless, there is information that the stud farm existed even before the first written mention, and that it was supposedly founded by Bosnian- Srijem Bishops on the estates given to them by the deed of donation by Croatian- Hungarian King Koloman in 1239.
Horses are first mentioned in Đakovo at the wedding of Bosnian Viceroy Tvrtko to Bulgarian Princess Dorotea. Tvrtko gave 10 Arabic horses and a stallion to Bishop Peter.Until 1806 Horse breeding was based primarily on breeding of horses of Arabian origin.
