I had a crappy day at the hospital yesterday. They kept me for hours while they tried to hydrate me and I had an IV and steroids to shrink the tumour and anti-nausea drugs. Then I come home and my daughter has decided to have her dog put to sleep today.
Jesse would be fourteen next month. She's a bigger dog and has battled Cushing's for the last few years. My daughter found her lying in a puddle of her own urine when she got home and Jesse has been suffering for some time. She has no strength and collapses, she seems half out of it, she doesn't see well and is almost deaf. We picked her up at a horse auction as a puppy and my daughter has done agility, 4-H, and lots of other things with her. She's also accompanied us to many horse shows. She's been a good girl and has been very much loved her whole life. Now it's time to do the right thing and allow her to be pain free and comfortable. I believe that we'll see her in heaven some day and my mom and dad will greet her as well as our dogs she knows that have gone before her. Give a kiss to Mason and Murphy and my mom and dad, Jesse. We'll love you and miss you forever.

Throughout my live I have been told sometimes, that animals don't go to heaven, and that they do, by other people. It's confusing to be sure. Some time ago I read the book Heaven Is For Real. It is the true account of a 5 year old boys journey to heaven, while he was very very sick.
In the book, the boy tells his Dad, Jesus rides a rainbow horse. I suddenly knew for sure our beloved pets are there. A 5 year old might see a rainbow colored horse, but I understand. I have learned about the streets of gold and jewels told about in the Bible. Jesus rides a white stallion. The horse has done what all horses do, he has rolled in the dust, from the gold and jewels, making him appear to a child who doesn't understand horses, as rainbow colored.
I believe heaven is for real, and out pets are there waiting for us.
I pray comfort for you NHG. See you later Jesse.

DiamondGirl, I can't believe God would be so cruel as to not have our beloved pets there to greet us. For some people it's the only family they'll have. They may not have souls in the way people have but for sure they're there.
Thank you everyone. My daughter is having a tough time. I don't know if there's ever any way to avoid the guilt of having to make the decision. She was hoping she'd just pass in her sleep but then she'd have felt guilty she'd died alone or something like that. We humans are always do determined to feel guilt, it's sad.

So sorry to read this. Your daughter did the best thing to help Jesse to be pain free. It's hard to lose a dear pet and friend....

Thank you all! My daughter has finally started to come to terms with it. She picks up her ashes today. Part of what bothered her so much was that Jesse was her first dog that was just hers and it was like losing a part of her childhood. My daughter is 25 now and got her when she was 12.
