We just put up a metal round pen on Friday. It is in our "Front yard" because that was the only clear space to put it. I was really happy that hubby agreed to put it there. There will eventually be pea gravel or ground stone for footing. It is kind of in the middle of everything so Hubby suggested decorating around the outside of it (maybe landscape timbers/flower boxes/planters)to make it more eye appealing. Does anyone have any good decorating tips? Our place (at least on the inside) is rustic looking and we would like to follow that for the outside (we moved in less than a year ago). We have a LOT of mountain stone all over our property, I was thinking of incorporating that somehow. Ideas anyone?

Well I have never heard of decorating a round pen. But You could plant fast growing trees around it to help with wind and then shade later on. As for the rocks. You could put them along the bottom of the pen to help hold the sand in and then maybe make a wide enough path of rock wall and plant the trees in the middle and fill it in with soil to plant flowers between the trees.Actually I would put a treated type board at the base of the pen to keep the sand in. As it will bank up..If you need any extra rocks we have plenty here also.. So like a rock trench around it with trees and flowers in the trench... You could also ad rustic items like wagon wheels etc to it. I take old boots and turn them into planters....

Is the location the "only" location this pen will be? You won't move it to another spot? Much would depend upon that answer what you could do to soften the look... I like the rock garden idea but would probably go a step farther and maybe not do just a rock garden but a water fall, maybe a small pond kind of thing. Then you could also add some height and variations of texture and plants.. I would be very cautious of the trees and plants surrounding as some have roots that gravitate to surface areas and that could over time lead to a footing issue and tripping on roots...that of course would be years down the road...
Are you wanting to do all the way around the thing or just a part that faces neighbors, street, your house front windows...
redzip has done some amazing landscaping on her project house...some innovative ideas headed your way, and mingiz has some good thoughts about traveling sand...and keeping it where it needs being...

I will post some pics later when I get home. I love the wagon wheel idea! How do you do your boot planters (do you shellac them or anything)? I have some old boots sitting around.
The round pen will stay at that spot (we really don't have anywhere else to move it).

I don't do anything but fill them full of soil and plant a flower in them. Also can hang them on a fence or just about anywhere. You can shellac them but I never have.

OK that shows alot of different angles for us to have a hayday decorating. are you going to bring in sand or footing.? as was stated you will need something to keep that footing in the round pen. years ago i used garden ties 3 rows up under a fence and it worked great. i just spiked them together than used another spike in from and one behind to hold them in. since it is going to be permanent in that area you might as well do that or something similar. as for decorating the outside. perhaps plant some type of shrub that grows quick and low like a hedge. that way you can let it grow as high as you like. and perhaps somewhere put out the wagon wheels. and 1/ whiskey barrels with soil for a low plant like a yew or azelea other than that, i am fresh out.

Well along the back where the neighbors house is you could plant a tree line of fast growing type trees. You could go with like cedar trees around the pen and space them so that when they grow it will be a good wind block too. Then between them use wagon wheels or even old farm items then plant lower type plants around them. But yet plant far enough out from the pen that they don't come through the bars. If you have any landscaping places around you, maybe they could give you an idea of what would work for your area.. Just make sure none of the plants are toxic to the horse's. That way if you decide to put one in there for any length of time they won't be at risk...
The pics of the critters are cute to....
