I usually have a dose of 10 -12 SMZs when I do have an incident, I put them in a large syringe that has been chopped off so large stuff can go through. I use warm water to dissolve the pills. Since the SMZs dissolve in water I can get all three boys to just take it down like a dewormer if it is their accident. If you have a 'I hate wormer' horse like my mare, resorting to a paste mixed with the sweet tooth stuff is good. A regular feeding being a little wet, several peppermints, and the pasty stuff will usually work for her. Not being able to pull a puncture item is a real pain if the vet is not right around the corner, or coming to the farm within the hour. I have pulled the item before the trailer ride and marked/ measured of how far it had gone in, and wrapped the foot to keep hole clean for the trailer ride, and taken the thing with me . Not perfect but large wrapping and puncture item kept safe in the foot was just not working to load the horse. The day we had a 'twig' go through Gift's leg we did a figure 8 wrap and we did trailer her that way, We used pliers to cut the twig back as far as we could to stop any bangs to the injury. How far did the nail go in?

Windlake - luckily he did ok taking the meds, especially at the end when I used the molasses instead of the karo syrup. Nail went in approx 1/4" to 1/3". I actually still have the nail.
Thanks goodness it seems like Mister and I got lucky this time. He is not showing any signs of lameness. I actually am taking him out to go trail riding tomorrow so I guess we will see how he does. I haven't ridden since January (mostly due to the weather but then also due to the nail).

We had a really awesome ride yesterday. The weather couldn't have been better. Only complaint was that the horseflies are already out but we had a great time. And even better, looks like he is still sound.
