our house/farm dog "gumbo" ruptured his acl last week. in jan. he started limping on his left rear we took him to the vet, and she said he had strained it, and put him on previcoxx. it WAS getting better until the maniac was running amok with his jollyball, ran up a plowed 10' drift, stopped in nearly mid jump, landed, and started crying, hubby brought him back in the house nearly crying himself, of course this is at 9:00 pm. we gave him a previcoxx, an aspirin, and called the vet as soon as they opened in the am. worst case scenario, was the outcome. a completely ruptured acl. so off to Great Lakes Veterinary Complex for mono-filament placement in his stifle, as he ripped the tendon off the bone, 14 big metal staples, and $1700+ later, he is supposed to be minor weight bearing after 6-8 weeks, only using it to "touch" the floor to balance on for now. now tell gumbo that, ALL 97.68 pounds of him is pretty rarin to go, on 3 legs, having mastered the three legged run quite nicely, he is not supposed to, but he has. and just the mention of the barn, feed, or horses gets him going !! will TRY to post a pic. give me a little while, remember? me computer dumb!!

Oh yes, been there too, had a Jack Russell that had to have that surgery and about the same price. He recovered excellently, no problems afterward.. But you try to keep a Jack Russell from running around...it was quite the challenge, just like your dog.
My son has a Catahoula, beautiful dog, not nearly as big as yours though, only about 40 lbs.

My friend was quoted three grand for the same surgery. It's major expensive. I'm glad he'll be okay but that's pretty lousy for you guys.

Please try to confine the dog , not easy i know but you do not want to compromise that surgery I had one done on my aussie shep who was 75 pounds and i kept her on a leash and just walked her. one week later back to have it looked at and it blew and the outcome was not positive.

you know, i questioned the outcome of this surgery, questioning whether just amputating the leg was going to have a better outcome.barring that he doesnt do it to the other leg! he is a bigger style curr, the registry just accepted his size three years ago. photobucket doesnt appear to me (how to post pics.) the way it is supposed to, to post pics. i have plenty of pics. but bad case of dumb a$%!! any H-E-L-P ?? :C

1fatmule - where are you? By having a catahoula named Gumbo, I imagine you are somewhere in the south. The barn I rode in as a teen had one named Crawdad. He was one of the sweetest dogs I have every known.
As for pictures, you don't need to use photo bucket here. You can just attach them as a file on your computer. There is a thread about it somewhere.

nope guess again, cold, snowy Michigan!!! i figured there were only so many names that i could come up with, so he was named looong before i ever even had the idea i would ever get one. i raised wolf hybrid for 16 years, and had 5 at a time in the house, but nothing prepared me for him!! not nearly as cunning, or as destructive as the hybrids, but very eccentric. i had seen one at a horse show years ago ... but never even saw them advertised here in mi. only one breeder, that is licensed with the registry. i will look for the thread, thanks i want to show off our kids (the tolerable kind) i love crawdad!!

Aww, poor pup! Glad the surgery went well. Good luck keeping him quiet, though! I always want to laugh when the vet tells me, "Now just keep them (dog, cat, etc.) calm and quiet for the next ... (however long). No running, jumping, etc." Really? You know as well as I do that as soon as they start feeling a little bit better, they are going to want to run, jump, etc., and how am I supposed to stop them?!?!? LOL

as he is feeling better he has tried to master the 3 legged run. here i sit in my fancy shmancy wheel chair, holding him by his collar to keep him from running from window to door wondering where my hubby is when he is outside. he is used to doing horse chores 2x a day, but it is about 300 ft from the house to the barn, and that is way too far, far too early! he does get his staples out saturday, and is done with antibiotics, and has pain pills for five more days, all that means to him is canned dog food to get them down, he has no clue there are pills in it, but then of course my little "rat" dog needs some too ...

today was one of his "dumb days" we had company, need i say more? my hubby had to put away the toy box, he is persistent if nothing else. trying to keep him from bouncing off the walls has always been a challenge, but now with basically NO exercise he is turning himself, and US into basket cases!! several HUNDRED small treats a day, low calorie things like baby carrots, peeled apple slices, lettuce, and frozen beef broth snacks are only working "in the moment" type situation. he tried to jump up on my hubby today, 5 days after surgery, a big no, no !!
