OK, how many horses are starting to shed with the weather we have been having.? I touched one of my geldings that came to see me when i was filling the water tank and he left grey hairs on my hat and gloves. so what does a person do when this happens? i just leave the shedding to mother nature and before long it is gone from the horse and spring is really here. can not wait. swing

Yep, I noticed last week that Mister is starting to actively shed. I do a bit of both leaving it to mother nature and currying it off. Sometimes a good bath really helps.

Here in Illinois we had a brief warm-up for a few days this week, but now we are getting ready to dip back below freezing with more in the forecast. Fortunately my horses haven't started shedding yet. Good thing since they are predicting single digit lows for us again next week.

The horses coats look different. I was grooming the horse with one eye and noticed the hair on his legs seemed longer and finer than normal for his winter hair, and some of the long hairs are coming off. i pretty much leave them alone. cause the temps are goiing to dip again next week here too.

Mine have started. Mine roll enough to de hair themselves..Then I use a metal curry comb on them. When it finally warms up I will pretty them up..

Zippy has such a fine coat that he doesn't get very hairy. A bit of a nice change from my old guy who shed so excessively, and was so hairy, from the Cushings. He had a few hairs come out the other day, but nothing major, yet

Lipazzon just spritz them with a mixture of baby oil and water from a spray bottle and watch the hair all clump together and than it leaves the skin and coats nice and shinny. as for my horses. the weather took a turn for the frigid and they have decided to keep their hair for a few more weeks.

Zena has now started to shed, but Sis is still hanging onto her winter coat... at least for a little while. We are expecting 6 to 8 inches of this weekend, and we are by no means done with winter around here, so I have no plans to help them shed out just yet.

Thank you for that. I just sprey it and then brush?

I learned ages ago to use baby oil. my show horses were always nice and shiny and the judges always commented on how they looked. i kept that trick and use it often. I buy gallons of baby oil a year and use it with a damp cloth for their faces and hooves and what a difference in the dust and dander department. there is next to none.
your horses look shiny and clean. so i would imagine lots of baths . LOL

I'll have to keep that in mind when Lucy starts shedding! Last year was horrible! I had to have a bottle of water nearby cause I was swallowing so much hair! She hasn't started shedding this year yet. The days are getting longer and I know the amount of light plays a part in growing and shedding coats, so I'm actually surprised she hasn't started yet. I wonder if horses in colder regions just keep their winter fuzzies longer despite the longer days?

i hope ours dont start! our temps. have been varying from this morning -15 zero, to 30+ degrees this weekend. my hubby thinks i am a wacco, i love brushing shedding horses!! mine have gotten used to my wheel chair, and just stand there. problem was i could only reach just so high on them. he had built a platform, with a ramp so i could get into our meadowbrook carts. i just drive right up there, and brush away, just remember not to wear fleece, or knit clothes, and brush, up wind
