A friend of mine wants to bring me sawdust from a mill to save me money instead of buying bagged shavings. he said that the mill is cutting alot of black walnut and he heard that it can be poisonous to horses.
well is it ? i said i would find out.

Absolutely NOT!!!
It has been known to put the coffin bone through the sole...within minutes damages have started... I was a kid and the barn I rode at got a bad load of "horse shavings" delivered...had walnut in it. Thankfully it was seen and noticed and only a few were affected but....the horses who had shavings of added to their stalls were in serious peril. I remember the barn flooding the riding ring, banking dirt and putting plastic under it so the horses could stand in wet mud to help soothe their feet. I know one horse lost his life, the others were never quite the same and some of those animals the barn bought or replaced and...not really sure where they ended up.
Would I chance those shavings on a facility with horses...absolutely not.
