I have a quarter horse stallion i rescued about 20 some odd years ago,, he was treated badly and will not allow anyone to pick up his feet, he had heaves really bad but i managed to keep him and his stall clean and with meds for years he is not showing signs of heaves,, he is about 34 years old,, he is loosing weight, can not chew hi food or hay, i have him on senior grain, and hay but i think it is time for him to be on something more. i started him on a weight builder, protein, supplement. and hay cubes soaked. and chopped hay with molassas, i hope it works he is nice and friendly,, just doesn.t like to have his feet touched,

Alfalfa cubes or a mixed grasses cube?
Nothing worked to get my oldie to gain till I did straight alfalfa cubes... Now he maintains and looks good for him.

Im giving him straight alfalba cubes soaked so they are real soft, than i have a chopped hay with mollassas, that i mix in that with some water to make it soft, plus senior grain, my miracle bread, and weight builder, supplement, might as well give it a try,, since he is in his 30s i have a feeling that he is going to be difficult to get his weight up,, but ill try

I second the alfalfa. One thing I had great success with was black oil sunflower seeds and an oil. I'll have to find my notes as to what kind if I even still have them. A vet had recommended putting both in the feed of a severely emaciated rescue I was rehabilitating. The sunflower seeds are high in fat and I started with a 1/4th of a cup and worked my way up to a cup a day with the option to go up to 2 cups if I felt he needed more.
Let me see if I can find what type of oil it was.
And I just realized this was from a year ago. I will still post this in case anyone else is dealing with a horse who is losing weight.
