For those of you who don't have me on facebook, two weeks ago tomorrow, Star got caught in barbed wire (we assume) and gouged his legs up. The lacerations healed, but he dislocated his shoulder.
The emergency vet couldn't tell if the shoulder was out because of all the swelling. She recommended bute and stall rest until we could figure out how much damage there was to his shoulder. At the time, she recommended not trying to trailer him to their x-ray machine. It would have been almost an hour trailer ride on a bumpy, curvy road when he could barely stand. She also said that if the shoulder was dislocated or if he didn't put weight within 2 days, that I would likely have to euthanize him.
A friend of ours that has had horses with a similar injury came look at him and popped his shoulder back in place. I consulted another vet via video and pictures (he couldn't come out because he was having surgery on a broken hand) and he suspects that he has radial nerve damage but that he could heal. Multiple people as well as this vet said to give him time as long as he is progressing and still in good spirits. I've seen multiple videos of horses with similar damage being worked. He may have to be retired or only gently ridden, but I'm going to give him that chance but still be realistic.
He is putting more weight on it than before but is mostly unwilling to keep weight on it. I called the only two vets nearby that I know of/could find with portable x-ray machines and both are unable to make it. One is out due to the hand surgery. The other is booked up and can't make the hour and 45 minute trip out here, so yes, I know x-rays are needed, but they are not feasible right now until the vet can come back post surgery or he can be stable enough to make that trailer ride.
I've begun weaning him off the bute. I have been rubbing his legs down with liniment and keeping him stalled as well as wrapping his legs. When there was heat and swelling in his leg, it was also being iced twice a day and he was given antibiotics. There is still a bit of swelling but the heat is gone.
The cuts are all pretty much healed over.
