So this little guy we got recently is great about loading in the trailer. He jumps right in. We've been keeping it open with the dividers all hooked back so it's like a stock trailer. Would it be safer to have him on a stall? At what point do you switch over to that? A certain age or level of training? We think he fell last trip and are scared he could fall in a stall and really be in trouble.

well to start with glad you are enjoying working with him, i have a feeling that as he grows his leg problem is going to be less noticeable. ,, after all no horse is 100 percent perfect and neither are people lol
as to when to tie.. he needs to learn to tie and perhaps ground tie.. leave the stalls open when trailering him for now.. if he feels more comfortable riding without any barriers.. if you have the ability make a small stand/tie stall at the barn.. leave him in there untied of course so he feels the sides on his body.. ask him to go in than put up butt bar and feed him.. put a feeder in the front and let him eat.. do not talk to him. in fact walk away than when you think he is done come back. undo the butt bar ask ask him to back.. just like a trailer.. you can also use ties to cross tie him in there but leave them loose enough to reach his food.. if he balks than untie and sooth him with your voice. low walls are best that way you can go from front to back.. BUT he should learn forward. and back and over by voice commands.. good luck

Thanks for the suggestions HL! He does stand tied but he's never tried to get away so he just stands there. I'm not sure what he'd do if he had pressure on the rope. He makes a wet mess of the trailer so it's slippery so that doesn't help. He had his first injections a couple of days ago. He's pretty sad and hates the Bute. Poor little guy.

in the trailer if there are mats than use shavings.. or straw. to absorb any wet and not have it so slippery.. i would still work with him.. sounds like he is level headed and not fearful.. BUT it takes only one time .. lol

Shavings, yes, good idea. We got a new trailer and never put any in although we usually do. He's mad at me right now. I think because now I'm the lady who takes him to the vet to be hurt and I'm the one shoving Bute in his mouth. He was somewhat friendly with me today but not like he usually is. And when I went to put his halter on he got cranky and was making an annoyed face and made me follow him for a bit when he usually comes over and puts his nose in the halter. Tonight he has his new tendon wraps on. He knuckles over which the vet said is the tendons not growing as quickly as the bones. Apparently the pressure and the heat will help although he's much improved since his trim. That being said, he thinks the wraps are scary and is almost falling down trying to sniff them.
And my darling boy was used in a riding lesson for a newbie who has ridden years ago and he decided to do his trick of not moving, not increasing his gait to a trot, not turning when asked, that goofy stuff. This is a horse that I can turn by turning my head so he's not insensitive. The weiner...
