I wasn't sure what category I should put this under so I put it here. I used to have a black horse. He stayed black all year, he didn't change in the winter and in the summer he also didn't fade from the sun. I think this is called a 'true black'. The horse my daughter bought last fall is black but his winter coat is a very dark bay. But he also doesn't fade in the summer or get the dark red mane and tail hairs they can get. Does that mean he's really a black? Or a very dark bay?

No, he's really dark. He looks black right now until you look closely and see that he has black legs and mane and tail and then you realize the rest of him is really dark brown. Once he's shedded out he'll be all black again. It remonds me of two horses I know that look white but if you look closely they have facial markings so I guess they're actually just very light palominos.
I just love him! He's a funny, quirky personality. He can undo just about anything. One day he was tied with Prince and he undid Prince's halter. I was nearby and I heard something drop and looked over and his halter was on the ground. Prince was standing there kind of looking around like 'what am I supposed to do now?' He's a gorgeous horse and is very broke but not well trained. He has a tough time with one lead, he moves into pressure, that type of thing. But he's a very stable, quiet guy. We're going to start his training all over with ground work first and move him into where he should be training wise. He's 8 years old, he should know his stuff. But coming from a reserve I don't think they really worry about that kind of thing. Supposedly he's been in a few parades before.
