CANDY
I resided in my own apartment that I shared with my beloved dog, Rail Roada.
Roada was very smart and loyal. She was stubborn like me. Roada was my best friend and we did everything together. Other than being the ugliest dog on earth, she was a perfect pet - well at least most of the time.
My family always laughed that for the cartoon of "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" that Roada had been used as the model for Max. The expressions and attitude of Max was soooooo like my Roada. We would all watch the show each year, mostly to just laugh at Max's "Roada expressions"
Roada was well behaved and knew to not make me mad. I was just a little more stubborn than her and any battle of wills we had, I would win; however, there are times where breaking the rules is just worth a battle.
My little apartment was prepared for the winter holidays. There was a stocking for Roada and one for me hung from the mantle. The tree was filled with ornaments that held memories of the years past. Lights twinkled on the tree and around the living room ceiling. Presents were wrapped awaiting for Christmas day. A crystal bowl was filled with candies to enjoy as we sat by the fire enjoying the blessed peaceful holiday season.
After an exhausting day of work, I returned home and Roada slunk to the front door to meet me. "I am sorry" was what her expression and actions told me. Now, I just had to find out what she had done. It didn't take long to notice tiny pieces of foil all over the floor and an empty crystal bowl. She had eaten a full pound of candy during my absence.
A guilt filled expression, a proper scolding and the joy of the holiday made the sinful behavior of the dog almost forgivable; however, ever so often there came a whiff of aroma from the dog as the candy was being processed and there was a smile on her face that made me wonder if she really had any remorse over the event.
I do laugh as I think back to that Christmas.
Roada was smart; if you are going to get in trouble, be sure to eat it all.
