LIMPOPO
For my birthday, I received the black and white kitten. We had seen her at a garage sale; however, mom said, "No Cat!" Then on my birthday, when I arrived home after school, I was informed not to use our bathroom as the toilet was broken. Funny how the broken toilet made kitty cries.
I named my kitty Limpopo after a seeing eye dog that I knew. I really liked the name. Later I found out there was a river in Africa by that name and so was not surprised when Popo loved swimming with us in our pool. Our friends had to see it to believe it, but Limpopo would jump into the pool and swim. Then she would perch on my shoulders, until she wanted to get wet again.
Popo followed me like a dog and became my beloved best friend.
Her first Halloween, I dressed the cat and dog up as ghosts to go trick-or-treating with me. The cat loved her costume and strutted around in it, but she went right up the wall when she saw the "ghost dog".
Christmas, we went to the neighbors and the cat and dog gave presents to all the neighborhood dogs and cats that they played with. The neighbors loved having their own critters remembered by the Santa dog and Elf cat that year.
There was a big red overstuffed chair in our living room. Limpopo loved her chair. She also loved a good lap to sit on. That year was the first year that it was filled by a man, the man who would soon become my step father. He loved cats and Popo adored him. Well, that was until he did a manly thing and repaired the broken window that she had been using a "cat door". The day he repaired the window she sat and observed the fine workmanship. That night when she found it had no hole anymore, she was very "put out".
When he came over the next day, she sat on the back of the red chair with her back to him. Looking over her shoulder, she would make evil faces at him. He was soon forgiven and her purrs told us that this man would be a wonderful father for us.
Limpopo picked a cat loving man to become our new father. I learned to always trust my pets for picking out the good people to be in our life. She made a good choice indeed.
