DANCING MOBILE
Some days I wonder how "professionals" got titled that.
The teachers and professionals wanted to have a meeting with me about my young son's progress. Peter-John was still a little guy and he faced multiple issues. I have been told that a deaf-blind child takes 700 extra years to get the same information as a "normal" child, so I was surprised that they were extremely concerned about his progress. Daily as a Mom, I saw my child exploring and learning.
The teachers and professionals explained in an eloquent manner that they were not able to teach Peter-John. They had been working with him to teach him animals. He oddly seemed to know DOG, CAT, HORSE, LION, DUCK, BEAR....and he also knew COW, LAMB, DONKEY, and for some strange reason also knew CAMEL. They had failed to teach him other critters. He seemed to learn the above mentioned ones easily, but they were unable to teach him more.
I smiled as I left the meeting.
When I arrived home, I was greeted by our two DOGs and the CAT. Peter-John went to play with his toys. Along with Doll, he played with LION, DUCK, BEAR and HORSE (no creativity to the names of his toys).
At dinnertime, I put him into his highchair. Above his chair was a mobile of the nativity. He loved for me to hit the various figures, to make them dance on the strings. He would form the signs with his little hands; Mary, King, DONKEY, then Joseph, LAMB, shepherd, CAMEL. Jesus and COW. His favorite was to make the sign to communicate for me to tap the "top" or Angel" because when I would move the Angel all the figures would dance.
Some days I think the educators are the ones that need to be taught something....Or at the very least for them to get more critters in their own lives. At very very least, to learn to teach by using a nativity that dances.
