An interesting afternoon yesterday to put it in printable terms. Shirley decided she could get in the old ugly truck and hold Star the blind mini horse foal for the trip to the vet. Star has had a few rides on my lap in the electric wheelchair that he seems to like. The trip to the vet went well for the most part as Star would go to sleep until he would jump awake and try to run on Shirley's lap. He would go right back to sleep quickly after being held tight.
The Vet found him in good heath and a surprise finding that his left eye has developed more in the last three weeks. Doc said, he may get to where he could see out of that eye if development continues. Only a slight glimmering hope though.
The trip home was not as easy with Star jumping in Shirley's lap with less sleeping. I would guess because he was hungry.
After we got home and Star had his wheelchair ride out to his mother both were happy to be back together. Star went directly to nursing. Baby, Star's mother, was tied in the back yard and I watched for a few minutes and as Babydoll moved around Star stuck right beside her side. I went in the house to rest a bit and fell asleep. I went out to check on them after about two hours and Star was no where to be found. After searching the total 8 acres I decided he had either fell over the steep deep ditch bank that is our one border or had entered a many acre corn field on the other border. I drove the loader tractor along the ditch bank that is mostly dry and filled with tall grass. That first trip I didn't see him but the second trip I spotted movement in the tall grass. When I called his name he let me know he heard me and I could here him splashing in water. I knew the ditch was way steep and deep for me to go down and get up without help. Not being able to see how deep the water pool was I went to the house to get a long rope to tie to the tractor to help me get back up.
Back to the ditch bank with the rope tied to the loader I started down the ditch bank sliding like on a water slide. Star was excited and was hard to get ahold of and I was able to fill my boots with water before get him caught. The good part was Star could climb the steep bank with me holding the catch strap to keep him headed in the right direction. Me on the other hand not so good. Using my heels and pulling on the rope with one hand while holding Star's strap I was able to get up an arms length. When I would try to get another arms length hold on the rope I would start sliding back down the bank. To make it not as easy a chore as it might have been Star wanted to get in my lap. Little by little we made it to the top when it took a while for me to get to me feet and figure out how I was going to get the two of us back to the back yard. I coiled up the rope and tossed it in the tractor seat with one end tied to Star's halter. I placed Star behind the tractor with only a short amount of rope behind the tractor. With the tractor in low drive we started back to the yard across on horse lot. Star resisted for a few feet and then walked behind without the rope being tight except for a few times. Star went to nursing as soon as he got to his mother and I tied the rope and to the fence and went to get my wet clothes off and into dry. Star got through the ordeal with out a scratch and being blind seemed only wanting to nurse and ride back to his home in the wheelchair on my lap.
