So I will be moving Dezi to our new property this year. Barn is currently under construction, it is NOT a metal barn, it is wood. And I know Dezi. She is a beaver, not a horse. I dont plan on stall keeping her much, we have a nice set of pasture to rotate her through, once those fences are completed. However, does anyone have any safe suggestions to curb her wood chewing appeal for when she is stalled? I've never seen her eat it. Just literally chews it off and spits it on the floor and moves to another area. Im pretty sure out of boredom, however I've tried "toys" they don't get her attention at all. No jolly balls, no soda bottles or jugs on string, added some "treat" balls, etc. She really doesn't care for them. I'd like to stay away from "calories" as she is a VERY easy keeper, like seriously. Easy easy easy. She always has a salt and mineral block available to her in the stall as well.
I'm hesitant to put metal near her. She once split her chest clean open on some metal. You know horses, if it is there they will find it and they will hurt themselves. She still has a big long scar on her chest from it. smh

Hate fence and wood chewers. not only does the fence or stall look horrible the splinters can get caught in their throats.. that being said. hubby covered all areas that can be chewed with carpet tack.. it is the metal with nails but of course put it on the edges nailed it on and no chewing as it is covered. We also got metal strips and nailed them on to the edges.. i also take used motor oil and spread it on all areas of the wood.. like paint and have not had any problems with chewing.. yes motor oil go to a station and ask them for about 10 gallons and put that on the wood using rubber gloves and a rag.. let it dry i have buildings up for 20 some odd years and the wood looks great.. the only destruction is from kicks from horses that like to kick while they eat. .

I've heard of using old motor oil as well but never used it myself.
HL- I'm not sure I know what carpet tack is. Could you post a pic of it in your barn so we can see how you used it?

I've heard of people rubbing Irish Spring soap all over the wood. It also supposedly keeps rodents away... it has a very strong scent.
